Earlier today, the FDA came down like a ton of socialist bricks on the freedom- and brain hemorrhage-loving entrepreneurs who make our nation’s fine alcohol-and-caffeine-and-guarana beverages. And then New York State Assemblyman Félix Ortiz, whose district is squeezed along the western shoreline of Brooklyn like a grotesquely oversize repackaged Camel Blue into a single skinny-jean pant leg, piled on top of the bricks.
Ortiz makes it through two and a half cans, but, enragingly, NBC New York disappoints:

On friday I drank 4. Four four lokos over the course of a few hours. I don’t really remember much afterward. Not the best decision I’ve ever made. I never threw up, but I was drunk well through saturday.

At 12% ABV/12oz and 74mg of caffeine, the beverage has around the same amont of caffeine as two rum and cokes. A single no doz provides almost three times the amount of caffeine at 200mg, roughly equivalent to a 20oz cup of coffee. The drink is comparable to two 12oz beers at 6% each.
In other words, this is a huge, hyped-up, non-story.
@7, did you really add 6 percent 6 percent to make two beers equal Four Loko’s 12 percent alcohol content? Math fail. A Four Loko is four 6% beers, or six Miller Lites (4.2%). Plus the caffeine.
@7 Try your math again. a ~24oz can of 12% alcohol is the equivalent of FOUR 12ox beers at 6%.
@7 Your can size is incorrect – they are usually sold in 23.5oz cans, which doubles all your results.

@11 Just as a rough bar-napkin measure, a fifth is considered to be 17 “standard” drinks. Sure, 16 beers would be a little less than that, if they were 12 oz at 5% (that is 16 “standard drinks”), but that would be rounding down for Four Loko.
