My coworker brought this photo in on his camera phone. Over the weekend, he had gone to empty out one of those plastic garbage cans that had been sitting outside partially filled with rainwater. It had frozen solid. When he dumped it out, he smelled a terrible smell—turns out there were two rats frozen solid in the ice. You can clearly see the outline of one of the rats in the photo. You can only see the second rat’s tail.

See, this is why no one with any meteorological background refers to “global warming.” The proper term is “global climate change.” We’re likely to see much more extreme weather around here in the coming years – not just hotter summers, but colder winters.
I feel bad for the rats, but that’s actually a pretty awesome looking thing. I hope the person took some really good, clear photos of it.

Um, Seattle has always had freezing cold temperatures in late-Autumn and Winter. I remember walking around Greenlake on elementary school field trips in the 1980s in December and being warned not to walk on the ice that was covering Greenlake.
I blame Al Gore. He’s getting the atmosphere all confused.

Yeah, @21 has is correct. People used to skate on Greenlake. It used to be far colder in Seattle, in recent living memory.

We get a really cold winter about every decade. I lived near Greenlake in the 70s, and I only remember it freezing hard one year (’72, I think). That year was a doozy. We had another really bad one in about ’85.
