Remember when Republican lawmakers introduced a bill to cut federal assistance for abortions in all cases except incest, life endangerment, and “forcible rape“?

Good news! Kind of! After feeling the heat from women’s health groups for trying to redefine rape, Republicans have taken out the “forcible” part. Via the Washington Post:

The bill, called the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, seeks to permanently bar federal funds from being used to subsidize abortions. It allows exceptions in cases in which the pregnancy resulted from incest or when the life of the mother would be threatened if the fetus was carried to term.

In the original language, it also allowed exceptions in cases of “forcible rape.” The term provoked an outcry from critics, who said that rape is by definition committed by force and that lawmakers were seeking to exclude from coverage certain kinds of rape by adding the modifier – for example, cases in which the victim was underage or unconscious.

The bill now would allow exceptions in all cases of rape.

So… the bill is still awful, but slightly less so.

In other women’s health news, the New Jersey Planned Parenthood employee caught in an undercover sting advising a fake pimp and his fake teenage prostitute (both hired by antiabortion group Live Action) on how to obtain birth control and abortions has been fired. The fake pimp and prostitute visited at least 12 Planned Parenthood clinics in six states in January. In each instance, the clinic reported the visits to federal and local authorities, according to the Post. Undercover footage of the visits over here.

  1. Note to leftists: when pimps come to your place of business and/or abortion clinic asking for loans/abortions/condoms for their underage prostitutes, CALL THE FUCKING POLICE!!!

Why is this so hard to comprehend?

  2. you are right, the bill is not really any better because they removed the term “forcible”, but that is not all…

check it out, there is this new provision in the “Protect Life Act” that would allow hospitals to let pregnant women die if interventions to save them would kill the fetus.

—and about the O’Keefe wannabees, they have been roundly debunked as a cheap stunt, and will most likely face a justice dept investigation.

  3. Doesn’t the Hyde amendment already prohibit federal funds for abortions?

Where are all the fucking job-creating bills the republibaggers promised?

Where are all the fucking tea party dipshit protesters ranting about how our government isn’t creating jobs? I thought they said they weren’t partisan… that they would go after anyone? Oh right, I forgot, they’re full of shit.

  4. Are we having any success labeling this the Republican Pro-Rape bill? And now that there’s the revision that #2 mentions, “the Republican dead mom bill”?

  5. I watched all the nasty videos on the link. Anyone who cared for another person more than themselves would do the exact same thing. It’s heartbreaking and disgusting and real.

  6. Ohai. It turns out that the Senate is still controlled by Democrats, and for this to be passed, it would need to be signed by a Democrat President. No sense blaming just the Republicans when this passes.

  7. @8: just because these odious bills probably won’t be passed doesn’t mean that those which proposed or signed on to them shouldn’t be exposed for the shitnugget attempts to do so. right?

  8. PP was outed like ACORN for being a fraudulent waste of taxpayer dollars. Margaret Sanger and Lothrop Stoddard would be ashamed of what has become of it.

  9. @10: no it wasn’t, that is a blatant lie, PP let the Govt. know there were peeps trying to do an underhanded sting. basehead you are yet again wrong.

  10. @10,
ACORN was a scapegoat and sacrificial lamb targeted by the teabaggers for one reason only: Barack Obama was once affiliated with them, serving as a cousel on one occasion.

The teabagger’s obsessive hatred of Obama led them to a smear campaign, full of lies, against ACORN, culminating in the production of a single video of misconduct by a single ACORN employee. Thus, with their n = 1, they claimed the entire organization was corrupt and turned the public against it.

The U.S. military has dozens of scandals every year. But you never hear about them unless they’re so overwhelmingly shocking they can’t be covered up. Do they get defunded? Nope, they get budget increases.

America is the land of the hypocrite.

  11. This is what the Repugnants are doing when we have an over 9% unemployment rate? Increasing the deficit and playing with rape, now it should be abundantly clear why they got us into the situation we are in. Republicans are worse than worthless.

  12. 10- translated:

“I’m pissed and angry that black people don’t know their place. I’m quite happy to defend any and all lies and falsehoods that give justification for my racism. Since the government is “for the people,” it is the place where black people usually go for justice. Therefore, I’m against it.”

  13. Anything associated with this douche bag O’Keefe should be dismissed outright. He’s proven again and again he has no respect for the truth, and only leads witch hunts against organizations he has a personal beef with.

  14. Can I get some perspective here? So federal money goes to clinics that perform abortions to cover the cost of abortions for poor people? Or is it a general grant type thing for operating costs.

Basically what does this mean for Sally Everywoman when she tries to get an abortion? Less places due to funding shortage or a more expensive abortion?
