Orchestrating the most elaborate parody I can recall, pranksters are unleashing 1.2 million copies of a knock-off New York Times today under the motto, “All the News We Hope to Print.” Here are the headlines for the issue dated July 4, 2009:

nty_se_spoof.jpg

In an elaborate operation six months in the planning, 1.2 million papers were printed at six different presses and driven to prearranged pickup locations, where thousands of volunteers stood ready to pass them out on the street.

Articles in the paper announce dozens of new initiatives including the establishment of national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for C.E.O.s, and, of course, the end of the
war.

The paper, an exact replica of The New York Times, includes International, National, New York, and Business sections, as well as editorials, corrections, and a number of advertisements, including a
recall notice for all cars that run on gasoline.

There’s a replica NYT web site over here. And Gothamist has video.

It took them six months to produce one issue of the paper. It makes you appreciate the choreography it takes to publish a national daily newspaper every damn day. Has anybody actually seen one of these gems? Any word on the article announcing that a judge strikes down Prop 8?

  1. I saw it this morning…a coworker had one, and at first I thought it was real. And I got excited. And then, obviously, disappointed! It’s REALLY well done.

  2. You’d have to be a world class stoner to make something like this take six months. Were they trying to guess what font they use or what?

  3. The saddest thing is that even the idea that these headlines could come true is so preposterous that it might as well be The Onion.

  4. Thats some shitty ass ideas. Ok the Iraq war and health care is fine, but really do we want the government telling people how much they can pay or not at least letting companies express their views.

    Dumb asses

  5. “It makes you appreciate the choreography it takes to publish a national daily newspaper every damn day.”

    Or how inefficient printing is.

  6. You don’t have to be a regular Times reader to see this for a fake immediately. I mean, they couldn’t even get the fonts (Times, anyone?) right.

  7. uhhhh @9, the typefaces used in the New York Times is not “Times.” I will agree, however, that they type used in this fake is way off, and that the real deal was designed custom for the paper and not available for public use.
