Tonight: The World Affairs Council presents a discussion with Humaira Awais Shahid, editor of Pakistan’s English daily newspaper and member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly. Shahid certainly has the chops to lead an engaging talk—she became famous for passing resolutions that opposed arranged marriages and disfiguring women with acid.

Her talk “Empowering Women in Pakistan and the Muslim World” is an opportunity to network with a powerful voice for women’s rights in an area where things are pretty damn awful. (University of Washington, Women’s Center, Cunningham Hall, 4101 George Washington Lane, 6 p.m., $15)

  1. If throwing acid at someone -male or female – isn’t already forbidden, there is something completely f* up about this country.

  2. All muslims don’t throw acid on their spouses. People use religion (and not just this one) to justify violence (against women particularly), but it is not the source of it. Has any crime of this kind happened in America? (not a rhetorical question)
My class is half full of Pakistanis and Indians men, should I be worried? (not a real question)
