Early reports say 30 are dead:
A tornado steamrolled over Joplin, Mo., on Sunday night, knocking out a hospital and causing many deaths across the city, according to various reports.
Joplin, which the reports said was in the direct path of the tornado, was left isolated and in the dark after the destruction, with telephone connections largely cut off and many homes without electricity after the twister touched down around 6 p.m.
This is just awful. A friend posted on his Facebook page, “My home is destroyed… our town is completely leveled.” To document the aftermath, the Daily Beast is posting a collection of photos. And here’s video of the wreckage::
Another video after the jump.

Wow, that is awful. I have a friend who went to MSSC/U and still has close friends in the area…hope they’re ok…
Tornadoes are srs bzness. One of the many reasons I moved the hell away from the midwest.
Jesus. One of my housemates was there not more than 2 weeks ago and says that neighborhood had nice mid-older houses with lots of trees. She cannot even reconcile what it looked like then to what she is seeing now.
I hope they are able to find more survivors, and soon.
I’ve got to say that I’m impressed that you’re on top of this at this hour of the night. Oh, I am, but I didn’t expect you to be. Two points.
My mom works at the hospital that got hit, but luckily had the day off. Those pics are unbelievable… someone estimated that 75% of the city was damaged.
There are better things to report or cry about. Did Michael Arrington pay you to post this WPP crap?
Sorry, WPP = White People’s Problems.
@ 7 & 8:
Eat shit and die.
No more complaining about our weather. It may be dismal but it’s not deadly.
I was just there a few days ago helping my mom look at houses she wanted to buy. I’m looking at these images, knowing the city and it’s just…flat. Jesus.
MEGGO – I see you wrote that your mom works at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Can she help us with the name of some organizations that we can get in touch with to see about getting some donations in to them? We have contacted the Red Cross in our area, but they will only accept cash donations, and we are wanting to get supplies into the area. Cash is great, but never sure where that donation is going to end up.
thank you for your assistance

It’s pretty amazing all the 20-odd years I lived there there were tornadoes every year but there was never anything this bad. Luckily most of my family has moved away and the remaining ones are fine. But still–the apartment complex where my mom once lived, the grocery store where my brother worked, one aunt’s former house, all destroyed. Not to mention the high school also destroyed.
No climate change here… move along, nothing to see…
