Two of the teachers who spoke at the 250-person Occupy Seattle student walkout at Seattle Central Community College, simply put, kick ass. My favorite was Esther “Little Dove” John, a professor of psychology and conflict resolution, who displayed her 99 Percent credentials. “I am an elder. I am a faculty member (part-time), so my existence is uncertain. I don’t know if I have a job next quarter, so I’m one of the 99 percent.” When I spoke to her after her two-minute speech, she explained her rationale for involvement in the student walk-out today. “I’m a longtime radical, and this is what I live for. The repossession by the dispossessed of the world.

  1. Esther “Little Dove” John is, according to the simplest of Google searches:

    “A healing flutist” by profession.

Now, I don’t want to place any judgement on the chosen profession of Professor Little Dove, but she lives in a world where income and stability are a function of marketable skills. You might not like that. I might not like that. But that’s not our choice to make. The market determines that.

Being an under-employed person — in the case of the Healing Flutist — is a lifestyle and occupation choice OF YOUR OWN CHOOSING. It’s not like the mortgage and Wall Street crisis ALL OF A SUDDEN wiped-out the market for healing flutists.

I’m not diminishing your right to be a healing flutist Professor Little Dove. But you won’t get much sympathy from anyone is you are surprised in another two years that you can’t pay rent as a healing flutist.

How you decide to act on that little nugget o’ genius is your call. But please don’t think then that your inevitable (and likely dire) economic circumstance as said flutist has anything to do with anyone but yourself.

Not Wall Street. Not Republicans. Not Bankers. Not Tea Partiers.

Your future is your choice. Plan accordingly.
