Forty minutes ago I posted an oh-so-romantic fable about New Orleans and young love and death.

And then real life had to go and slap me upside the head. Over in India:

A lover couple, who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Chenab river after their parents opposed their relationship, were today cremated on a single pyre as per the wishes of their families. Narinder Kumar, 23, of Kastigarh village in Doda and 21-year-old Sunita chose to end their lives after their parents did not agree to their marriage, police said. Tying their hands and feet with each other, they wrapped a sheet around them and jumped into the river Chenab at Marsoo in Assar belt, about 130-kms from here, on September two

Holy crap.

Brend an Kiley has worked as a child actor in New Orleans, as a member of the junior press corps at the 1988 Republican National Convention, and, for one happy April, as a bootlegger’s assistant in Nicaragua....

  1. Following the death of Patroclus, his body was consumed upon a pyre and his bone fragments and ashes were interred into a specially made tomb; upon the death of his companion Achilles, Achilles was similarly burned and the fragments of bone and ashes were gathered and into the same tomb with Patroclus mingled. Thus, Achilles and Patroclus went back into the cosmic miasma as one; all of me feels that this should be a standard burial practice for lovers. It is beautiful, in any case.
