In advance of today’s protest against the increasingly dunder-headed UW Daily, editor Sarah Jeglum publishes an editorial:
The Daily staff, this campus and I have all grown this quarter. Challenges have come up in every sense, and we’ve met them to the best of our ability. I’ve watched my staff grow and have learned with them what exactly it means to be a student newspaper — to be the voice of a campus — and we’ve formed new ideas about how to better serve our community.
You, our readers, have also been challenged. You’ve been challenged by what we’ve written. You’ve agreed and you’ve disagreed. But most importantly, you’re letting us know what you think, and we’re listening.
In doing this, you’ve challenged me. You’ve challenged my ideas of journalism, its purpose, and the weight and meaning of free speech.
There’s more where that came from.
Also, here’s the Seattle Times report on today’s protest, featuring both the glamour shot of Jeglum above (taken by Times photographer Greg Gilbert), along with this caption:
Sarah Jeglum, The Daily’s editor-in-chief, says it’s important to have a balance of viewpoints in the paper and isn’t planning any sort of apology.
The rally/protest regarding the Daily starts today at 12:30 pm on the west side of the Husky Union Building on the UW campus.
(Added P.S. for those bemoaning my tacky, petty headline: Sorry, but if you’re trying to work the Ann Coulter schtick, you can’t just poop out of your mouth. You have to look like a Barbie while you do it.)

I am not angry or offended by David’s comments because Sarah is absolutely adamant in her defense of an opinion piece that was full of lies and hate. Compared to the gay bashing in the article and illustration, David’s comments are an irritation or just a bad joke, but not a reflection of his hate towards women or his perceived value for non-attainable beauty norms. As the paper’s editor, Sarah shows no remorse for treating a minority group like non-humans.
I’m a woman and I read the Daily and I was at the protest today. I think a student paper at what is considered the most prestigious public research uni in the state (compared to WSU and Western) does deserve attention. UW does not exist in a bubble, as many would like to believe. There are over 40,000 students of UW in Seattle and the rest of King County. Many of us are still outraged and embarrassed (and confused) at the reasoning for their Rossi endorsement. You out of town commentors, do you know about Rossi’s anti-abortion stance? For the Daily to have nominated him is just bewildering. The UW is a public institution (funded by tax dollars) that Rossi seems to have pretty much loathed.
#101- So because one has or endorses homophobic ideas, it is somehow OK to attack them based on their physical appearance? In truth, no one really gives a FUCK what The Daily says or thinks. Just like protesting Prop 8 on Broadway does absolutely nothing. But there should be a certain level of decency, rules of common good that apply to everyone, including those that disagree with you. David crossed the line, and nothing but a sincere and wholehearted apology will suffice.
Maybe David will apologize if Sarah apologizes to the UW community (since no one else outside of UW is supposed to care, right?) for letting that piece in without fact checking it. David, you in?
Someone should throw a pie in her face.
@ 103- So an apology for attacking another person based on their looks is only valid if that person apologizes for views that you disagree with? Sure makes a lot of sense. David attacked her in a sexist, childish, and revolting manner. Attack her because of her views on Prop 8, but don’t you dare think that it is OK to attack for appearances that a FAT-ASS like David deems ‘undesireable’. Fuck the Stranger. Have you ever seen Eric Grandy or Megan Seling for that matter? Because they, along with David and ECB are the ugliest fuckers to ever walk the face of the earth. Hell, Kelly O’s fat ugly ass will show her tits for a shot. The point is that they are all whores and insecure children who probably were the victims of molestation. David needs a serious fucking beatdown. And mark my words: You will get it, David. Watch your fucking back!
I would just like to jump in at this late date and point out that if Sarah Jeglum were a weird-looking dude, I for one would completely agree with making fun of the way he looked. See: Gary Busey.
David, see where a mistake can lead? If not, I’d direct your attention to #105. Hmm, recognize that vitriol? See that kind of shit anywhere else?
You reap what you sow. Now your coworkers are taking that heat for you! Do you suppose that kind of talk would be fair for someone whose job title makes them indirectly culpable for what you say? Why don’t you print out that Kelly O quote and run it on Slog? That’ll teach her for being loosely associated with a misogynist prick!
Multiply the above by 100, and you’ll get an idea of what the staff at UW (that made a newbie-fuck-up) feels like.
Of course, this is your chance to teach them what a ‘real’ journalist does, and apologize. Or you can continue to hide out until this blows over tomorrow. Then again, she may have a boyfriend…. or a brother…. who takes that kind of low-road bullshit seriously, and won’t have forgotten about it so soon. Remember, when you went personal, you made it personal to more than just her… You should feel lucky she’s not my girlfriend. I hope hers is a pacifist…
@ 105, No, Sarah does not have to apologize for her views. Sarah hasn’t publicly commented on her views towards Prop 8, so I don’t know if she agrees with her opinion writer or with the staff of the Stranger.
Whether she is for Prop 8 or against it is besides the point. Sarah needs to apologize for not doing her job as the editor of a paper– fact checking! She should apologize for letting hate speech into an opinion piece. She should apologize for marginalizing a group of her peers on the UW campus. She should apologize for encouraging people to equate gay marriage with bestiality through the illustration she chose to run with the opinion piece. If Sarah doesn’t apologize for failing to do her job there will be a movement to replace her as editor of the Daily next quarter.
107 posted 105.
I like the assumption that people who make a living talking shit are unprepared for or not used to taking flack.
This is absolutely hilarious. David writes “needs makeover” and every webtard in existence swoops in screeching with vitriol, demands for an apology, and threats. Actual threats of physical violence. Based on the reaction here, you’d think that David had written something along the lines of “UW’s Ann Coulter Wannabe Publishes Editorial, Is A Foul, Rancid Douchebag. I’d like to see a broomstick rammed up her ass and have her paraded naked and covered in feces across the campus. Then, for an encore, I’m going to tie her down, pry open her mouth, and drop a big hot load of shit into it. Keep in mind that I will have eaten pad thai the night before, 5 stars, so my shit is going to be extra spicy. Should we have her fucked by a baboon, as well?” Now THAT would be worthy of a reaction.
“No one reads the Daily”–except for all the people who wrote enough LTEs about John Fay’s rhetoric malfunction to fill seven pages of The Daily last Monday, as well as Mark Emmert and the UW Board of Regents. As a Daily alumnus quite amused by all this kerfuffle, I’d just like to comment here thusly:
“The Daily sucks” = self-fulfilling prophecy.
I’ll second the emotion of all those here who have basically said that, if you don’t like the content in The Daily, go to The Daily newsroom and submit your own writing. Here’s hoping all this kerfuffle will make The Daily a better paper next quarter.
That is all from me for now.
Granted, the pictures in the Stranger of the staff are probably posed portraits and most probably took time to make themselves look presentable but not overdone (glamour shots can be kind of tacky if not done right). They don’t look bad at all in those photos.
I think Sarah looks fine. This thing for the Times was probably sprung on her at the last minute and she didn’t have time to prepare, as in put on makeup or fix her hair. Doing that stuff takes a lot of time and work, it can be tiresome, and it can take time away from doing more important things. That’s why I haven’t done it in a while. She’s a college student! She’s allowed to look like she just woke up for class. Oh btw, there’s been pictures of her before in the Daily where she’s slightly more done up, so to speak, and she looks fine there too.
Too bad about her views though.
(Ugh, I’m so tired from finals.)
@95 nailed it-
so let’s hear it again
” You can’t “use it” [sexism] any more than you can call a genuinely turd-like person a racial slur & have folks be cool with that.”

@111
I did go to the daily newsroom, i did submit my own editorials and they were all rejected by the opinion editor, natalie sikavi. so it looks like somebody needs to think of a better idea than that, because it doesn’t seem to be working
To the people writing “she’s just a poor college student, and David is picking on her”, fuck off. If Jeglum didn’t know the outcome of her decision, then she is a moron and needs to be booted from the Daily. She knew exactly what she was doing. And as the saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Journalism is a rough world. If you act like a complete and utter douchebag, expect to get treated like one.
@115,
The implicit part of what I meant by “go to the Daily newsroom” is “perhaps a coup is in order in the Daily newsroom.” If Natalie Savaki is publishing douchebag frothery by the likes of John Fay, but rejecting work by UW folks who aren’t part of the spoiled-brat high-school clique that’s currently running The Daily, then it’s clearly time for better, smarter people to take over.
Your situation sounds like mine was in Winter Quarter 2000, when I first submitted something to The Dopey only to have it ignored by the Abercrombie Zombie who was in charge of the Opinion section at the time. Next quarter, Tommy Smith–a real sharp guy–took over Opinion, which opened the door for me and some other folks from Ruckus to take over that section and trade in the ignorant rich-kid bullshit for more relevant stuff that was going on on campus then, such as the student anti-sweatshop movement and the grad student unionization drive.
Take my advice, go back to The Daily sometime between now and the start of Winter Quarter, and keep trying until you get your stuff, and your name, in the paper.
In this midst of this Slog comments/David Schmader failure controversy, I’m still trying to get my head around how Ann Coulter looks anything like Barbie or considered good looking by any stretch of the imagination. I’m afraid I can’t.
In this economy, Schmader is doing his job: generating traffic. So cheers to him, and thanks to everyone who hangs on his (often snarky) word.
Seriously though, I hope none of you guys actually make good on your threats- but what would you really do? Comment him to death?
And how about a real plan for resolution: Schmader and Jeglum give EACH OTHER makeovers…

Christy O. fails to see why persons outside of UW should have any say in what the paper says. I guess she is too pre-occupied with her own issues that she failed to realize that the University of Washington is a state sponsored school. As such, that means the good people of Washington’s tax money is being spent on that newspaper. As a state sponsored newspaper, it should reflect differing views which impact the school in a responsible manner. Perhaps her opinions are not erudite enough for a progressive body such as the University of Washington. If so, then her editor should fire her for bad writing.
Who is this guy anyway, from his picture he looks pretty cute.
You justify your makeover remark by saying that if she’s “trying to work the Ann Coulter schtick,” she has to be pretty. It’s tidily self-referential that you justify the second part of your headline with the first part of your headline–I don’t believe that anyone is saying that Jeglum is trying to work the Ann Coulter schtick, or has otherwise made that comparison, except you. I certainly don’t believe that Jeglum herself has stated that as an aspiration.
She has the look of a cornered troglodyte.
Ever heard of a copyright? Pretty sure that you shouldn’t be using that photo, unless the The Stranger has some syndication of Seattle Times content lined up. Now that makes me laugh.
