- Alithea: “BRB, Gone Castratin'”
If you don’t live in the great state of Pennsylvania, you might’ve missed this helpful public service announcement warning women and aaaaaaall their friends that if they drink too much, they risk date rape. Because as science teaches us, rapists need alcohol in order to exist! And, as Slog tipper Alithea points out, victim blaming goes hand in hand with state-funded public service announcements!
Well, good news via Slog tipper Paul: After receiving criticism for the thoughtless victim-blaming, the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board has pulled the ads:
Stacey Witalec, a spokeswoman for the Liquor Control Board, said the online ad was part of a broader campaign that began a few months ago on the website ControlTonight.com. She said there was both criticism and support for the ad, but the board decided to pull it Wednesday evening.
Witalec said the campaign was trying to bring attention to a serious problem, not suggest rape victims are to blame. “On an annual basis more than 97,000 people between the ages of 18 and 24 are the victims of alcohol-fueled sexual assaults,” Witalec said, “and those statistics are staggering.”
That is a staggering statistic but there are better ways to convey it than this particular ad—for instance, maybe the state of PA could give away free beer glasses to women that clearly state “Don’t Rape Me” in comic sans. Just as a friendly reminder to would-be rapists that drinking doesn’t correlate with consent.

I think that your finding the ad hot says something more about your POV of that image than the image itself. But, that’s just me. I certainly didn’t go boiiiing when I saw it.
The words don’t say rape is your fault, they say rape can happen to you. If you believe they say rape is your fault, it’s only because you don’t want to take responsibility for yourself any more.
Also, you may realize that blacking out leads to danger…but I’ve seen more than a few girls STILL doing exactly that. Weekend after weekend. Also, you’re not the only people in this world, contrary to your opinion. There are still new women being made every day.
Also, with harsher laws made against rapists from time to time, I don’t think we’re exactly ignoring rapists are a problem. We may not be marketing the problem, but ignoring it is a bald-faced lie.
Don’t pretend to be obtuse. That you, as a gay man, do not find this ad titillating does not preclude the fact that straight men will.
And it is straight men who do the majority of the raping.
As to your concern for future generations of women let me put your mind at ease. They will be told that getting black out drunk is a bad idea. They will be told from the time that they can understand that it is on them 24/7 365 not to get themselves raped.
Because rape is just this weird thing that happens
Don’t be retarded. Gay men know an arousing image when they see it. This isn’t to me.
God, such a homophobe. Please don’t breed and pass your emotional stuntedness and ignorance on to others. For the love of humanity.
Ah, that’s all you have left? Baseless accusations and puerile insults? Well it has been more than ten rounds, and I imagine you’re pretty tuckered out.
All that aside, I hope that our discussion has given you some things to think about and maybe a little bit of a different perspective on the issue.
Now if you’ll excuse me I have cookies of my own to bake.
Ciao!
Actually, yeah. If you’re going to be so mentally incapicitated to suggest that because I like dick, I can’t determine an image of a female to be sexy, then yes, this conversation has run its course. You’re a stereotyping bigot. Somebody who has the intelligence to maybe tie their own shoes. And, really, it renders the rest of this discussion in a new light. You, ma’am are a man-hating bigot. You’re a troll of the worst kind. And, this conversation will end because you have no ability to see any point of view other than the constructions you have created in your own tiny bigoted head.
