The Rumpus has a very interesting post by an author who got her pubic hair waxed in time for Valentine’s Day.
Before I came here, I asked the girls, “Why do people get this done?”
“To feel cleaner,” D said.
“But isn’t it pubic hair’s job to keep things out, in essence, to keep things clean?”
“It’s like getting a haircut or highlights,” she said. “You’re taking care of yourself.”
T said: “My hairdresser doesn’t tell me to hold my butt cheek while she waxes my asshole.”
“You do it for guys,” D said. “They like it the same reason they like you to swallow. It’s porno. It’s that special thing. They like it ‘cause they know we don’t.”
It’s a pretty enjoyable read, although it still doesn’t really answer the whole waxing question for me. And while looking for a SFW photo to attach to this post, I came across this video from three years ago:
And now I really don’t get it.

Yesterday I was at WaxOn getting my brows done and overheard the waxer in the next room telling a girl all the shapes she could do with Brazilian waxing, these included hearts, triangles, stars and also initials. I was pretty amazed by the initials but I think it would be too much of a turn off if a girl actually got my initials written in her pubes.
Twisted, surely, but also kind of a genius, no
Oh contraire … pubic hair, (especially too much!) most certainly keeps things in!
Going down on a girl is a MUCH more enjoyable experience when you taste the stuff that is fresh out of the box as opposed to the stuff that has been lingering outside the box, mixed with the sweat etc. etc. that has acrued for the day, and then of course there is the picking of the pubes off your tongue.
Really, the brazillian, yes it is pleasent … but to make going down an enjoyable experience for all involved, just keep it to a short trim.
I know there are guys who disagree, and yes this America … you have your right to a hairy sweaty bush. However, I’m certain I’m not the minority on this.
“They like it ‘cause they know we don’t.”
I have met many a woman who waxes and would disagree with that.
I definately enjoy the look of my own puff-pastry lips sans hair, and it feels nice to touch….sort of like a horse’s nose. I don’t understand all the squealing, though. I don’t yelp like those women when I’m getting waxed….suspect they were putting it on for the camera and sort of protesting their innocence, if you will (“I’m a nice girl, so this is all to shocking and rough for me!” they seem to be saying.) It’s only very mildly painful, and one looks so cute in the end.
Agreed. The pain is so minimal, and then you’re maintenance-free for about a month! Compare the alternatives: shaving is WAY more painful, nair is disgusting, and au natural is just not for me…I don’t do it for him. I do it for me.
But you HAVE to go somewhere that knows their stuff. I’ve been burned before. Literally.
Wax On is the greatest. Shelly, I love you.
@3, Oh no, I agree 100%.
What’s wrong with buzz clippers?
So, women don’t like to swallow? My wife would beg to differ.
What @3 said.
And watching that video, what I noticed was how quickly it was over. Yes, there was a little squeal of pain, but it only last about 1/2 second, and then they were fine. If anything, that video could be used as advertising for the waxing industry.
Some of us guys prefer the sight of a pussy over a patch of hair. That’s why we like them waxed or shaved.
that video kinda turned me on…i think saying men like trimmed pubes because women don’t like doing it is ridiculously cynical. i like trimmed pubic hair because i like eating pussy, a lot, and i’d prefer not to have any hair in the way. simple as that.
I had laser hair removal (not all of the hair, just to a nice, neat triangle) and it is seriously awesome. Very effective (after 4-5 treatments) and not that expensive (particularly as compared to waxing every month).
It hurt like a son of a bitch (moreso than waxing, and the treatments take longer), and I’m not sure you can do the, uh, taint area, but still, I would highly recommend it.
I perfer women that are easily confused with silverback gorillas.
i like to keep it real 70’s down there.
I’m with douglas – coming up with a mouthful of hair is a real turn-off.
Men like it because women hate doing it? What kind of sociopaths are these women hanging around with?
i get kind of sad when i hear people say or see them write, “They like it ‘cause they know we don’t.”
In addition to making oral sex a little more pleasant for the giver, it also makes the entire area a little more sensitive, and I always figure the “point” of the little triangle is to indicate that this is a well-maintained vagina, rather than a pre-pubescent one. Also, this author’s contention that no (heterosexual) man would do this sort of thing to make things like oral sex more pleasant? FALSE.
After my first wax, my husband stuck his hand down there and said “hmmmm, I never had any complaints before, but that does feel pretty nice”
this is why I date Asian girls…no digging through the bush required.
“I perfer women that are easily confused with silverback gorillas.”
Well, you must love Seattle.
I have a girlfriend who observes Valentine’s Day by dying her pubes fire engine red with Kool-Aid. She looks good and she t-a-s-t-e-s great!
subdude? Is it a GOOD idea to put sugar in that area? Uhm yeast infection, urinary tract etc. etc.
Just saying
Nobody likes to floss when they are eating somebody out. I trim so you don’t get hair on your lollipop
@24, you don’t use the stuff with the sugar added already. Just the little flavor packet. 😉
Oh, and waxing hurts like a bitch. However, it hurts about 10X as much to wax armpits than the classic bikini area, though. (I haven’t been brave enough to do the full brazilian…I think I’ll wait until I can get the laser before I tackle that.)
Most people like a clean workspace. Considerate men trim or wax as well.
I don’t get how you don’t get it, Paul. Maybe you’re trying to win points from the furry-loined women in your office? Their sex lives have probably been ruined by their politics.
subdude? Is it a GOOD idea to put sugar in that area? Uhm yeast infection, urinary tract etc. etc.
You should avoid sugary things in the vagina, but around it is fine. In fact, many women get sugared instead of waxed.
@27 …. ok sugared?
What is that?
@24,
There’s sugar-free Kool Aid.
@27,
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. Sugaring is waxing, the “wax” is made out of sugar and it’s a hundred times more difficult to use and painful than paraffin wax.
Ha! You’re so funny. There are oodles of men out there willing to put up with public hair; there are, what?, a handful of women out there willing to put up with your bullshit. You do the math.
@3: Furry bush? Afraid of the daily marinade? Foreplay in the shower!
Fresh and clean and good to go! Yum!
the most painful thing about a brazillian is its cost. (even though they deserve every penny.)
@29, there’s sugar wax that you use as a substitute to traditional paraffin waxes (spread it, put the strip on, pull off), and then there’s true “sugaring,” which is a totally different technique.
Michelle at SugarSugar could be more specific, but basically sugaring is a little glob o’ goo, that grabs the offending hairs, which are then flicked off of the skin. It doesn’t damage the skin or pull it off at all. It’s waaaaay better than the old-school sugar wax. Way. Better.
Sugaring is waxing
If you mean it is waxing because it is a depilatory method, then you could also say shaving, nair, and tweezers are waxing. But they clearly aren’t, due to the lack of wax.
You’re taking issue where there is none. Sorry if I offended your imaginary friends in the Stranger office, but they have the means to defend themselves. Run along now.
@1 You’re “at WaxOn getting [your] brows done” and you’re thinking it might be “a turn off” if a GIRL had YOUR initials waxed into her pubes?
@33,
Aww, you’re so sweet. The women must be throwing themselves at you, all 10 percent or so who wax their pubic hair.
@30. The daily marinade is a bit a too fermented for my personal taste. And no I don’t like to get flossed while I do something I would other wise enjoy (It really fucks with my focus too honestly … of course as a male everything is MY fault … it’s such a burden to bear the total bane of humanity.)
On another note, I find my hair does get in the way of my own sensitivity, YES I maintain my pubes as well! I pay particular note to the “side burns” Because they have got to be vile (especially if the girl goes for the deep penetration) And funny enough, it does improve my own sensitivity as well. Guys also have a daily marinade as well (Especially those that like the occaisional tea bag) and so most of us do (or should) do our part too.
What’s worse is that I get to have the greek chest hair, which I’m not a big fan of (and neither is androgenous Seattle). But women are more creeped out by a guy getting his chest hair removed than leaving it there. I don’t care, I was a swimmer and am more than aware of the added sensitivity of being hairless (that’s the reason why you shave ironically, the sensativity and feel of the water and NOT hydrodynamics!). If I was in a somewhat monogomous relationship, and the girl asked … well yeah I would get rid of it.
But honestly. I meant no disrespect, it’s a free country. If chowing on used brilo pads is what makes Seattle happy, then so be it. But personally, I don’t think I’m the minority on this one. Male and female general maintenance is a good thing (brazillian is just a luxury).
all 10 percent or so who wax their pubic hair
Actually, it’s been my experience that more women than not trim, shave or wax. But then, I’m lucky enough to date women who can actually see their genitals without the aid of a mirror.
Still, I’d wager that in the younger dating crowd (say, 18-30), most women trim. And the guys should too!

@37,
So you’re assuming that female employees at The Stranger don’t even trim? Holy shit, you’re a fucking idiot.
In my experience at the gym, maybe 10 percent shave or wax. That’s it, and that’s not indicative of the can’t-see-their-genitals-without-a-mirror population. If you’re that picky, that’s your choice, but you’re competing to get a tiny percentage of even the young and fit population. Have fun with that.
So, former tri-state… are you intolerant of anything down there but the bare floor? I assume you must have had some, um, unpleasant experiences. But if I tried to bare floor it all the time (rather than just maintaining/trimming, and saving the all-gone look for special occasions), I’d be debilitated by the crazy itch.
I shave my nuts too cause its more comfortable and less sweaty. That hair gets in the way. Shaved is good. And for eating pussy, it undoubtedly makes a difference!
Have fun with that.
I do, thanks! 🙂
@40
No lily, just a short trim, and I’m a very very happy frequent customer.
And the all gone is a special treat.
Yeah, I was wondering when someone was going to mention the itch …. God I’m not cruel!
The waxing has the benefit over the razor of not itching when it grows back and it takes a while for it to grow back.
I also think the trimming cuts down on the hairs that fall out naturally that get caught in the entangled matrix of the unmantained mange, waiting only to fall onto the tongue of the adventurous rustic hero….
you know controls the shedding …
@43, FTS: thanks for the clarification! 🙂
keshmeshi, I wonder if the ladies who let it all hang out at the gym are also the type who are less concerned with others’ perceptions of their bodies, and therefore less likely to wax or shave. My group of girls-who-are-friends (mostly 20-somethings with a few 30-ish ladies) are all pretty squeamish about showing themselves in public… but all of them shave, wax/sugar, or trim regularly. Which means I know too much about their nether-regions! Admittedly my sample is small, but it’s something to consider.
@43: okay then, well we can only hope your oral skills are superior to your prose;
“entangled matrix of the unmantained mange, waiting only to fall onto the tongue of the adventurous rustic hero….
really what the cock is that kind of crap writing supposed to be? whatever you were attempting, ewwww, fail.
@45, sorry … my sugar crashed. I’m not proofing well. I’m also trying to be engaged in what I’m doing at work, which isn’t so engaging at the moment.
Not that it matters, I do have decent oral skills …
waxing does NOT hurt like a bitch, lily. the pain is no longer than two seconds, and you can buy topical numbing cream if you have it done at salon dewi. considering that women deliver ten pound babies through their vagina, pain during waxing is nuttin’. sheesh.
Beard trimmers are better than shaving with the bic-type razors. No chance of accidental nicks or cuts. Waxing and nair products cause some massive in grown hair problems. Nothing like hauling your self into the doctor with infected in-grown hairs.
@47, Women who deliver 10-pound babies go through some serious pain, and deserve a an Oscar for their performance and unlimited martinis for life. I did not now, nor will I ever, say that waxing was on par with labor pains. Besides, if it were as painful as labor, nobody would be doing it every 4-5 weeks!
That said, waxing hurts. A lot. Every woman is different, right? What might be a quick twinge for you might not be the same for me. Waxing rips my skin off (which is a discomfort that lasts for a lot longer than 2 seconds), and I’m allergic to almost everything that absorbs into skin, so any numbing stuff is out.
Sugaring works much better for me than waxing, even though I still bleed with that. I never had trouble tweezing my brows, but other parts of my skin (esp. the underarms) are just crazy sensitive to any depilatory action.
And now you know more than you ever needed to know about me. For that, I am sorry.
@44,
Perhaps, but even including those few women who go to great lengths to cover up, I’d say the waxed/shaved/terrified-of-other-women-seeing-them-naked contingent makes up 15/20 percent of women at any of my current or former gyms. But maybe I have a knack for picking gyms full of confident women.
And I have to say I find your anecdote (that it’s mostly women who lack confidence who shave/wax their pubic hair) really depressing. Perhaps that’s the real origin of that cynical remark in Paul’s post: “They like it ‘cause they know we don’t.”
