Shall I order the lamb burger? I love lamb, I love burgers. But these particular lamb burgers—on the menu here at Nick’s English Hut—are made from natural, grass-fed, ground-up lamb babies that were raised (briefly) at a place called “Ewenique Farms.” I want a lamb burger. But I also have a blanket policy against patronizing businesses with names that are or incorporate puns. Mostly hair places. Do I make an exception in this case? Please advise.

  1. I know the owner of the farm – seriously, ranching family, and her grandma named the farm “Ewenique” when she started it, but the current generation totally wishes she hadn’t. Still, the business is known by that name and they figure times are too tough to risk switching now.

So the pun is not intentional by the current owners. You’re in the clear.

  2. They couldn’t have cared less about those little baby lambs. And naming the place Ewenique doesn’t give them a pass.

DON’T DO IT, STAND YOUR GROUND AND LET THEM KNOW YOU KNOW WHAT THEY DID TO THOSE LITTLE LAMBS!

  3. I’m actually the same way about movies and TV shows that do that with their titles. fuck you, Running Wilde, I’ll never watch you!

  4. getting a lamb burger that was knowingly made from lamb from a place called ‘ewenique farms’ is practically the same thing as buying the lamb from that farm yourself. if you are to hold to your anti-pun principles, this lamb burger should be avoided.

  5. The best lamb is stewed off the bone, but if a burger’s all you’ve got on offer, take the burger.

Then go get your hair cut at Barber Black Sheep, or Curl Up & Dye, or Hannah & Her Scissors.

  6. Honey, I’m telling you that place doesn’t smell right. The Lion made good lamb burgers back in the day. I can’t speak to Nick’s.

Hey, my straight, middle-aged neighbor said to me today “I’ve been following your friend Dan’s cool new ‘It Gets Better’ project. Well done.” (He works on youth programs for the state of Michigan.) Howz about that — straight middle-aged people in the midwest know about it!

  7. I never eat lamb – had it a couple of times without knowing what it was and didn’t like it. Then I found out what it was another time and still didn’t like it.

Your stomach will insist on it one day and then you’ll see how much Catholic guilt you have left over! If you don’t have any… then grab another one.

  8. I would, but say it with as much derision as possible. There’s a beer I enjoy, but saying it’s name hurts me. Showing my deep contempt for its name makes it a little easier, and so with a cringe I order, hoptical illusion. ugh.

  9. Dan, it’s killing me that you’re here in my hometown, and this queer-theorist and long-time-reader graduate student has no idea what you’re doing here! Researching at the Kinsey? What lecture are you sitting in on? Please, dish, before I resort to stalking you based on your slog updates!

  10. a) I was lying – I know nothing about Ewenique;

    b) @40, Kinsey’s my best guess too – I hope Dan does spill the beans. In a comment responding to his brother, Dan did say he’s in class while updating It Gets Better and Slog, with the teacher’s support.

  11. Get the lamb, Dan. The place has a lame name, and as the commenter above said, it was named a long time ago and the owners wish it had been named differently.

Eating meat from a place that treats their animals with kindness and respect for the sacrifice they are about to make supports those places, and is a big vote against factory farming.

We vote with our money for whatever it is that we buy. We support farms that treat animals well. We do not support the factory farms that abuse their animals.

You are what you eat. Eat a happy little lamb, Dan. Stay away from factory farmed meat.

  12. Go to the Lion tomorrow. If you’re still there. And so all of us former IU people don’t migrate down to Bloomington and stalk you en masse (we’ll be the large group of misfits wandering around the Union, gingerbread men from Sugar and Spice in hand, yelling, “Dan! DAAAN!”), for the love of cock tell us what you’re doing. We want to help!
