Breakfast.

Teenagers who fail to eat breakfast in the morning are more likely to lose their virginity at a younger age, according to a new Japanese study. A nationwide survey examining the sexual experiences, family relationships and lifestyle habits of 1,500 Japanese found an unexpected connection between eating breakfast and teenage sex.

The average age of first-time sex for those who ate breakfast every day as a school student was 19.4, compared to 17.5 years of age among those who skipped the first meal of the day.

And some sad news for the Christofascists at the American Family Association: not even the kind of theocracy that you long for can stop teenagers from having sex.

Premarital sex on rise as Iranians delay marriage, survey finds

Rising numbers of Iranians are spurning marriage and having sex illegally outside wedlock, Iran’s state-run body for youth affairs has said.

A survey by the national youth organisation found that more than one in four men aged 19 to 29 had experienced sex before marriage. About 13% of such cases resulted in unwanted pregnancies that led to abortions. Sex outside marriage and abortion are outlawed under Iran’s Islamic legal code.

  1. That’s easy. If your parents give enough of a shit to feed you in the morning they probably care enough to teach you about sex and keep tabs on what you’re doing.

  2. This is probably a correlation, not causation situation: kids who eat breakfast throughout their school years probably come from stable homes where parents cook them a decent breakfast, over which they discuss responsible sexual behavior, birth control, stis, and so forth.

  3. Oddly enough Iranians can get “temporary marriages” in some locales, for like for two hours, to avoid the whole sex-out-of-wedlock issue. It was one of the steps to help prevent the all-male madrassa students from going homo when certain desires arose.

  4. Correlation != Causation

However, I would suggest that the massive gap and unexpected correlation does merit further study. Now, to get that grant…

  5. As to the second study… I think religious folks should just start marrying girls off at 12 or 13 again. That way practically everyone could be a virgin when they get married. Problem solved…

  6. It always bugs the hell out of me when they release studies like this that suggest a causal connection where there is none. There are so many factors at play that it’s pretty damned dishonest to paint these connections as something meaningful.

It’s weird when they release these things as ‘news’ too.

  7. Then again, when I was a lad I used to shoot a huge load whenever I saw Tony the Tiger on the back of my cereal box. Then I wasn’t so horny the rest of the day.

  8. This reminds me of an article I always used to teach critical thinking to 3rd graders. It was called “Pickles will kill you.” It stated that 95% of everyone who dies ate pickles. So yes, correlation, not causation!!!!

  9. Hmm, my body is telling me something. It’s a sensation coming from sort of the middle of my body. I wonder what it is.

Is it hunger? Eh, probably not, I’m 16 after all, I’m always horny. Let’s fuck.

  10. I can’t tell you how many times, at breakfast, I heard Aunt Jamima squealing in delight and having to make room on the buffet for grandma’s ass.
This explains everything. People really get paid to research this shit?

  11. “Sex outside marriage and abortion are outlawed under Iran’s Islamic legal code.”

I needn’t point to the obvious, but I will anyway just to make sure no one misses this golden nugget of truth:

Rick Warren, James Dobson and the other famous fundies have everything in common with Ayatollah Khamenei and his band of Islamic clerics (who have ultimate authority in Iran; they can reverse any decision Ahmadinejad makes), save for clothes, language and religion.

If Warren, Dobson and the rest of their freaktrain of misinterpreted Christianity ran the U.S.A., it’d be just like Iran here except the leaders would be wearing Hawaiian shirts instead of cloaks and turbans.

  12. @2 and 3 – I disagree that no breakfast implies bad parenting. Maybe the kids that don’t eat breakfast are the nightowls who are not hungry early in the morning. Nightowls are the more adventurous types…
