An exclusive look into the private lives of Seattle’s non-human population.
Grudge Match: Ospreys vs BNSF Railway! A family of ospreys who wisely nested on the railway bridge west of the Ballard Locks are “spreading their wings,” according to MyBallard, but it’s not all industrious nesting and baby mouse eating for these guys. BNSF Railway tried to take down their nest last winter, but the ospreys, like Jean Grey, came back. (Beautiful family photos of the osprey over here!)
Speaking of Animals That Never Go Away: Seattlest reports that Rachel the Pigโthat big-ass bronze pig that tourists love to take pictures near/on/under in the Pike Place Marketโis turning 25 tomorrow. Then it’s probably time for her to stop begging for spare change at the market and get a real job, no? Instead, the Market is celebrating the freeloader’s birthday with music and a vintage farm truck for tourists to take pictures near/on/under.
At Last, Cuteness Gets Its Due! Finally, Maple Leaf Life reports that Cloud City Coffee is creating a shrine to dogs for Dog Month (otherwise known as August). They want customers to bring in pictures of their dogs, thus validating the very existence of an entire cottage industry called “pet photography.” You’re welcome!

Can I assume you are referring to the X-man, Jean GrEy?
Yes! And now that’s how it’s spelled. Thanks!
I think osprey only eat fish, not mice. We have a few nests in my hood and I got to watch one once soar high above the river at dusk, a whole fish in its talons, the fins rippling in the breeze. Awesome sight.
