Read about this elsewhere today. Reading the story again, it is clear that it is a case of humans infesting a snake home, not the other way around. So far, the snakes seem to be beating the infestation, but humans can be devilish and are expected to move on to “nuclear options” soon…

The paperwork in the video says they were “gardener snakes.” Maybe the former owners should have negotiated a truce wherein they would give the snakes hoes and Crocs and straw hats, in return for unlimited zucchini and tomatoes.

Bullshit. Garter snakes aren’t endangered. Anywhere.
When common garter snakes were popular pet store items, people would seek out hibernacula like this in order to scoop ’em up in volume. That lowered their numbers in the wild, but never to a level dangerous to their survival as a species. Of the regionally specific garters, only the San Francisco garter is on the endangered list.
