Did Mercer Island just explode, or was that the loudest fucking thunder I have ever heard IN my entire life, literally, bar none, holy shit?
Lindy West was born an unremarkable female baby in Seattle, Washington. The former Stranger writer covered movies, movie stars, exclamation points, lady stuff, large frightening fish, and much, much more.... More by Lindy West

whoa, seriously
Damn you, Lindy West. You beat me to it. The internet is a race!!!
YESSSSSSSSSS1!!!!!!!!
It woke me up.
I think maybe something got struck by lightning and is now on fire? Because I hear sirens everywhere.
Is this the apocalypse?
Woke us up here at the 953.
I’ve heard bombs and I’m not quite sure it was one of those.
Maybe planes shooting down an alien spacecraft
Thought it was a nuke until I woke up fully
It shook my apartment (Pike & Union). I don’t hear sirens though. It sounded like something collapsing, to me. But there were two separate crashing sounds, separated by a minute or so. Ugh.
Definitely woke me up on Capitol Hill, and I’m no light sleeper. I think i heard the exact same thing about an hour ago, too. Sonic Boom?
There was definitely a flash just before the second one. Like, almost simultaneously.
It was just thunder, dears. A very close lightning strike, from the sound of it. Go back to bed. No school today.
We live under an approach to Sea-Tac. I thought a plane crashed into the house next door.
And you won, Lindy—I was on my way to the computer to say WTF! too.
Was a crazy snowpocolypse over Lk. Washington on my drive to work this am. My g/f called me to tell me about the thunder and lightning. Fire trucks responding to area near MLK and Cherry.
Thundersnow. Nice.
hey guys, don’t worry. God just dropped an anvil on our toes. or was bowling. or burped. but look at the fruitage! that was some serious sky clap. it’s snowing like dandruff on king kong! I guess I won’t strangle steve pool now. I’m sorry steve, how could I ever be upset at you. it’s that sleazy wannabe “ladies” man jeff renner that needs to walk the plank.
Woke my ass up…
And here we are.
Another snowstorm is hitting Chicago tonight. 6-12″. I can’t remember the last time December weather was so terrible, pretty much all across the country (relatives in Maine keep sending reports of crazy snow/ice, power outages, etc.)….
I heard it on Queen Anne, but it didn’t seem so loud.
The light woke me up in Capitol Hill/Madison Valley and the thunder was just icing on the cake.
25th and olive was very loud. Thought Satan was in the yard.
Wished it was a nuke when I woke up fully
CAN I COME OVER I AM HELLA SCARED
Night moves.
Woke me up like whoa. I thought it was a plane, then I thought it was an earthquake. I didn’t hear any sirens, though. I don’t have to work until one (if at all), but I’m up for the day!
I am here to report that thunder woke me up! I am not sleeping! Please make a note of it!
the first one woke me up with a jolt! totally apocalyptic.
iz jet plane landing on mah house.
Didn’t hear it in Forks.
Wow. I heard nothing, and I live on Capitol Hill.
I wonder if I still have to go to work today…
I live in Wallingford and didn’t wake up to anything besides the sound of WinAmp waking me up at the scheduled time. Of course, if I can sleep through hurricanes, then thunder doesn’t wake me up at all.
I was awake and looking out my window when it happened, it sounded like a lightbulb popping with an immediate crash following. The whole floor shook and the windows rattled. Yes, it’s an old house.
It sounded like a bomb was exploding above my apartment… at first I thought it was an earthquake. Loud motherfucker. I felt the building shake all the way up on the 12th floor.
When I looked out my window, there was no sign of snow on the sidwalks or the freeway. 15 minutes later there were at least a couple of inches on the ground everywhere.
That one woke me up. The lightning for the second one looked (through my closed eyelids) like someone used a camera flash in my room.
Not from outside the curtains, not from the next building: inside. Freaky!
It was a nuke and we are all dead. We’ll spend all of eternity writing in this here comment thread.
I agree with Dan @13, I thought a plane had/was crashing. We’re in Columbia City and loud planes buzz us going to Boeing Field all the time. It was so &^$*& loud. Looking out I saw all the snow and then figured thunder – but jeebus. It was loud! Then my alarm clock went off – that was anticlimactic – but then a second flash and thunder instantly. christ.
I had actually woken up a bit earlier to take a leak, and looking outside noticed it had not yet begun snowing. Mumbled something about “retarded weather forecasters”, and went back to bed.
Was still awake when it hit, saw the flash through my closed eyes. I honestly wasn’t sure whether it had been thunder or a terrorist attack.
Then turned on the teevee and started watching, saw the second flash out of the corner of my eye, then saw it again on the teevee screen (from Redmond). “Thunder snow”, according to the teevee people. New one for my lexicon!
I didn’t hear it at all, but then the two and a half fucking feet of snow outside my house muffles the sound very well.
Lindy – King 5 News caught it during an outdoor forecast!

FUCK I love King 5
that broadcast is cool — but it does do it justice. i was thinking bomb or earthquake as well, when it woke me up. and there were car alarms aplenty.
i thought about checking here to see if someone posted… but i figured everyone else, like me, would rather try to go back to sleep for another hour or so, and check it when they actually woke up.
how wrong i was.
THUNDERSNOW!!!!
I’m guessing all the snow insulation carried the vibrations more deeply and further.
They were talking this morning on KUOW about two colliding air masses, the one from the north bringing in the snow, and the colder air mass moving up from the south. Clearly these two ran smack-dab into each other creating unstable air that developed into a massive thunderhead.
I’ve heard a fair amount of thunder in my day, but I swear these were the LOUDEST ever!
I’m still reeling from the fact that Lindy still lives with her parents on Mercer Island
I live on Capitol Hill. It just sounded like it came from the southeast. My apologies about the “reeling.”
