Kyle Regan—a masochistic Stranger reader—has vowed to do every single thing recommended by the Stranger Suggests (movies, galleries, bars, concerts) for the month of January. Look for his reports daily on Slog. Also, due to moronism, we neglected to post what he submitted yesterday. So today you get twice the Kyle to make up for it. —Eds.

The Week of Fun ended with Laff Hole, The biweekly comedian-run event at Chop Suey. Nobody in our group had ever been to Chop Suey, let alone Laff Hole. (We’re losers, we know.) I liked the place, especially after my friend Wence bought us double-shots of Patron. I think it’s safe to say I’ll be back at Chop Suey pretty soon, especially with Four Tet and Electric Six playing in the coming months. Fat Tire on tap is also fucking sweet.

Apparently there were a few jostles to the schedule. The schmucks who had been booked as headliners dropped out for another gig in LA. Boo, hiss, right? Even the opening band dropped out, leaving a considerable schedule hole. Well, Seattle comedians ain’t bullshittin’. Within the day, a slew of replacement performers and the band Golden Robot Army stepped up.

GRA, local Americana-sounding band, were really good. If bands were judged on beards, Golden Robot Army would be top tier, lead by Zach Galifianakis’s long-lost twin. I think my over-exposure to stand-up over the past week affected my favorite performances: Solomon Georgio and Amanda Lee Williams. Georgio’s “Rodney Gayngerfield” (at least I think that’s what they said, if not you can use it Sol) was fantastic. I missed Williams’s show name, but a drunk boisterous women ragging on audience members is always nice. Jesse Weyrick beat Joe Henry in the Laff Hole phrase-off, which I judged (why does my brain turn off whenever I’m handed a mic?). Weyrick’s Haiti joke was brilliant. Too soon my ass.

This was a great event and Seattle should be proud to have such a dedicated group of people willing to do so much for so little in return. Major props go to the people I saw day in and out: Dartanion London, Emmett Montgomery, Jessica Strauss, Solomon Georgio, Kevin Hyder and others. There were more, and they know who they are (because I don’t).

Within one week, my comedy exposure went from nil to somewhat respectable. This was a week of sky highs and crushing lows. I enjoyed the Week of Fun, but I’m glad to take a break from the laughs.

  1. Kyle – It’s great that you’re getting out and getting some culture. But really? Fat Tire? Next up you should learn how to drink some legit beers.

  2. “If bands were judged on beards, Golden Robot Army would be top tier, lead by Zach Galifianakis’s long-lost twin.”

Hypothetically speaking, it’s good bands aren’t judged by that. I’d leave crap like that out of a so called holier than thou reviewee. And Zach has a family of Greek restaurateurs in the dixieland, as well as a horse and chicken farm, much interesting fodder for long-lost-you-f*** twin, kyle of shit.

  3. Thank you, Kyle. Your presence was a great addition to the Week of Fun. You are quite possible one of the greatest audience members, and becoming one of my favorite Slog writers. As far as I’m concerned, you are family in the Seattle comedy scene.

I geniunely wish you the best of luck on your future writing ventures. Thank you again, and never call me Sol.

  4. Great review! A quick note for accuracy: it’s not the fault of the band Miniature (now called Titans Of Industry, I believe) they couldn’t be there. For the first time in the 3 years I’ve been booking music for Laffhole, I gave a band the wrong date. they were ready to go on the day I told them…last week :/

We were very lucky to get GRA in to rock the house on short notice, beards and all, but I just want to make sure nobody thinks that Miniature are flakes, because they are 2 Legit 2 Quit.

  5. Hey Kyle, not that you asked, but I really think these reviews would be much more readable without being riddled with self-deprecation. Please stop apologizing for not being hip enough for the Stranger/Slog crowd, the idea alone is ridiculous.

  6. So is Kyle just a super-outgoing guy, or is it his association with the Stranger that has him, say, judging a comedy event, or going out with all the comedians after the show (as he did in a previous post)?

The self-deprecation tells me it must be the latter. Even so, sounds like he’s having a blast.
