Within hours of Prop 8 Trial Tracker releasing this victorious reworking of the iconic Prop 8 sign…
- Jason Cohen
…the AP reports:
Supporters of California’s gay marriage ban have filed an appeal of a federal judge’s ruling striking down the voter-approved law. The appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday was expected, as lawyers on both sides of the legal battle repeatedly vowed to carry the fight to a higher court if they lost. […]
The 9th Circuit court has no deadlines to hear the case, which will be randomly assigned to a three-judge panel.
Obviously, this fight won’t be ending any time soon.
UPDATE: The very brief appeal notice is here.

Round 2, here we go…
Love will always prevail over hate
in the ruling, the court didn’t leave much for the proponents of prop 8 to go on. they pretty much decimated every argument the proponents made. despite my lack of faith in the likes of scalia and roberts, i’m feeling more confident that once this case makes it to the supremes, we’ll get the outcome we’ve all been waiting for. and that will set the stage for the repeal of DOMA and other state bans. this is exciting.
Posting simply to get another absurd animal image here.
I think we’ve won this one for good.
Much as I like yours, Joe, I think Hover Dog wins on concept. I found the hi-res version through Google.
According to some, the final ruling from the SCOTUS, should they take it, could be the first Monday in June, 2012.
Gill could be mid-May.
I predict the “gays are the end of the world” meme will get a lot of play in 2012.
Also, add me to the animal parade.
I feel like the only one who believes that we are living in a fool’s paradise with this “victory.” It will be overturned by the conservative-majority SCOTUS and will end gay marriage across the country.
I just got an AFA Action Alert in my spam box, advising me to write to my representative and urge that she (the email actually says “he,” because obviously the thought of a female member of Congress is outrageous) initiate impeachment proceedings for Judge Walker. It says, in part, “Under Judge Walker, it’s no longer “We the People,” it’s “I the Judge.”
“In addition, Judge Walker is an open homosexual, and should have recused himself from this case due to his obvious conflict of interest.” Riiiiiiiight.
So basically the argument is he should be impeached on account of his appalling gayness.
I think the “inverted family” victory graphic is a horrible idea. By putting up a poster with a “traditional” family tipped upside down, you are inserting yourelf right into the bigots’ narrative, that marrige equality proponents hate and want to destroy traditional famlies. We don’t hate traditional famlies! Many of us marriage equality supporters _have_ traditional families. If I could reach out through the internet and blot out the image in this post, I would. Yesterday’s court case was a victory for every reasonable and caring person in this country. It was not a defeat for people in heterosexual mariages with two young children. Doing or saying anything to suggest otherwise is a ghastly political mistake, besides being, you know, untrue.
I kinda thought what @11 is saying. Gay marriage doesn’t turn families upside down, it allows all families the option to enter into marriage. Really, it puts things right-side-up.
I totally agree with @11. Take it down Dominic and reject this type of gloating
Put me down with @11. Happily married myself, and definitely on the side of equality. I am not your enemy.
@ 11 et al:
The first thought that came to my mind when I saw the re-worked sign was, “Now they look like they’re turning cartwheels!” (Granted, I am a huge dork!)
@11 wrote exactly what I thought when I saw the silly graphic.
I’ll bet the legal team on the Prop 8 side will be much better for the appeals. The case they made this time was ludicrous.
@16: I don’t think the appeal team will be any better. The bastards were already grasping for straws as it is.
Also, in keeping with our little meme-in-progress: “The world could always use more tigers.” –Hobbes
@ 11, 12, 13, 14, and 16, as a member of just such a family, I laughed when I saw that graphic. But, I see your point.
Matt @18, just to be clear, I’m not even the slightest bit put off by the graphic. And it is kind of fun and giddy. I just think the bad guys will find it a useful prop with which to rally their troops.
I think the graphic looks exactly like the face of a giant Sea Monkey™ and I love it.
Hunker down.
Thank you @11 and others. I hate that graphic. It’s counterproductive, bigoted itself and just feeds the fire of hate. A terrible idea. Jason Cohen, or whoever, is a moron.
It my opinion that we are dealing with a group that considers itself a “persecuted majority” and this graphic feeds their perception of themselves. I agree with @ 11 and others, it is counterproductive to wave a red flag in the face of an angry bull. It’s a terrible idea.
I would have designed the sign to expand the families, not flipped their icon over. I’d have pushed it to the left and added some same-sex led families with and without children. After all, this is about equality and making sure all families are protected, right?
back to the viennese sewers, harry, AND STAY THERE!!
