For the second time this week, Seattle police are investigating a series of robberies at Green Lake.

According to SPD, five people were robbed along the park path around midnight last night by a group of men armed with a handgun and wearing bandannas over their faces.

According to police sources, SPD’s K-9 unit tracked the men for two blocks before losing their trail. SPD subsequently called out the Guardian One helicopter, but were unable to locate the men.

  6. @5, I’m guessing that shooting at a police helicopter carries a somewhat higher risk of getting caught than, say, mugging people in a park in the middle of the night.

  8. How hard is it to find a group of young black men up here in the Great White North? I mean, one of the reasons we are so liberal up here is because they are NO BLACK people. It makes it so much easier to be a progressive when the blackest thing in your ‘hood is an Obama sticker on a Prius and the occassional cute black kid who has been adopted.

  22. I’m a woman, and I don’t give a fuck what color these young men are! It also happens to be information that is easily acquired elsewhere, for those who want/need to know.

    If I’m out walking around any neighborhood in Seattle in the middle of the night, I pay attention to my surroundings and to the people passing/approaching me. When anyone walks toward me, I try to be aware of what is close by, whether I need to cross the street, make for light or people, etc. I also try to meet each person’s eye as they pass, and to say hello in a confident voice.

    I love walking around the city late at night, and have been doing it since my teens. I grew up in Madison Valley and the CD, and have lived all over Seattle. I’ve never felt universally unsafe in any neighborhood here, but there certainly have been situations when I have felt less than comfortable. I’m not willing to give up my contemplative walks, so I pay attention and try to be conscious of my risks without being paranoid. Recognizing that crime doesn’t have a color is my way of making sure that I ALWAYS use my best practice with regard to my own safety.

    What kind of an idiot would I be if I thought I had nothing to fear walking in the dark past a group of young men just because they were white?

    * And, btw, I’m not insinuating that any individual deserves to be mugged – whether or not they’re paying attention – or that those mugged weren’t observant enough. I’m just saying that there are risks to being out late at night, and these are the safety measures I employ because of those risks. No one deserves to be mugged, of course, and risk can never be completely eradicated.

    REally? You know that 8% of Seattle population committed over 50% of the homicides in Seattle last year. This year they shooting for over 60%, it’s quite impressive. I can’t remember the last time anyone was mugged by a Korean or Japanese in Seattle.

  26. I’ve long since reached the point where I’m not out late at night unless I need to be, and I’m in full ‘move quick, watch your back and be ready to defend yourself when need be’ mode when I am. I mean, many parts of town are safe… but many parts of town are not, and there are more unsafe parts nowadays than many of you think. Case in point, the surprise from this post. Who here would have pointed out Green Lake as a good spot to get robbed at night?

  29. Blacks make up only 8% of Seattle but blacks committed over 50% of the murders in Seattle in 2008, and by my count they have committed about 85% of the murders in Seattle in 2009 (so far).
