Oregon:

A former police officer and juvenile court counselor has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after he admitted sexually abusing two 16-year-old girls in a church group he led as a youth pastor.

Dean Barnes also was convicted of supplying contraband in jail. In December, officers discovered the 34-year-old Barnes had carved a sharp point on the end of his toothbrush.

Ohio:

A former youth pastor preyed on more than just young people, according to the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office. John Picard, 41, has been indicted on 26 [additional] counts of sexual battery. Indictments were released Tuesday.

Picard, formerly youth pastor at Grace Brethren Church on Marion Avenue, was indicted last year on 16 counts of sexual battery. The alleged victims were two teenage parishioners. Assistant Prosecutor Bambi Couch-Page explained the new case, which has four reported victims. “This is not dealing with any past victims,” she said. “These are people who are somehow affiliated with him through his prior ministry. As things progress, we keep getting more and more information.” … “In this instance, rather than force used, it was some form of coercion, which distinguishes it from rape,” the assistant prosecutor said.

If I were a spectator in the courtroom, I’m afraid I’d be trying to disguise a guffaw as a coughing fit when that individual introduced herself in a sex-related case.

    Dickish, I know.

  3. Dan, I would like to nominate my mother’s pastor’s wife for some sort of positive recognition. As soon as she and her husband took over their current church, the first thing she did was institute background checks for everyone who worked with kids. Some people came forward and admitted they wouldn’t pass, and she reassigned them to non-interactive church duties.

There are some church administrators who don’t completely have their head in the sand.

  4. We have a member at our church who was convicted of looking at internet kiddie porn. He served some time in prison and went through some sort of 12 step addicts victorious stuff. Now, years later, he goes on international mission trips and plays in the church band. He doesn’t have any contact, that I know of, with kids, but is kind of a asshole in other ways. There needs to be a wider scope to YPW.
