The influential reclusive author is dead at 91. This is an awful month for literature.
UPDATE: The New Yorker has put all of his stories in one place. Give them a try; I preferred his short stories to his novels.

Did he fall off a cliff?
Nope.
What I want to know is if they’re going to find a bunch of new manuscripts. Has he been writing this whole time or just lying around?
What’s he written in the last 49 years?
Phoney.
And for really old people.
He was old, reclusive, and hasn’t written anything in 50 years. I’d hardly call it that “awful” for literature.
JD Salinger Died Today at the age of 91. Though he only wrote 4 very short books he is responsible for inventing Christian Hipsters, WASP whimsy, and Wes Anderson….
It’s a shame for the people who love him, but he hasn’t been any kind of literary presence for years. He could have died 50 years ago – who would have known?
Are you kidding? This is great news for literature. Now the clock starts counting down (a looong countdown, admittedly) until the copyright expires on his unpublished work. This might also finally allow a US screening of the Iranian film Pari, and other things Salinger’s lawyers have blocked.
Well, there goes my Halloween outfit.
Girldoggie, shouldn’t you be out dancing on a cop’s grave? Not that you’re wrong here, but I sure didn’t miss you in your absence.
Phonies of the world are rejoicing.
RIP.
@11: I went to a screening of Pari in the U.S.
Deaath at 91, or 94, or 87 isn’t a tragedy, it’s just the natural order of things. His books aren’t going anywhere, and that’s the important thing.
What I hope never happens to him is what Dmitri Nabokov is doing to his father Vladimir. I hope he burned his manuscripts (though I wouldn’t mind having a look at his letters, most of which, I suspect, are to and from attorneys).
Maybe now we can read this?
I hope Mark David Chapman shoots whoever is responsible for this.
Howard Zinn died too.
i just conducted a short survey, and 3 out of six named his most famous book. 0 out of six could name any other book than “catcher in the rye.” quick, slog readers, hie thee to google so you can feign concern and fake intellect. lolzerz.
@13- You can really hold a grudge. Impressive.
R.I.P. William Forrester.
You the ghost now, dog.
Or rather,
R.I.P. Forest Whitaker
You the ghostdog now, dog.
@ 21, grudge? You probably forgot what Gurldoggie wrote when Timothy Brenton was killed. That’s not a grudge (I’m not a cop nor do I have any connection with cops), that’s just remembering what a low, low person Gurldoggie is.
@ 19 – And Zelda Rubinstein, too!!

“Howard, JD, don’t go into The Light!!”
🙁
@ 18 – You, sir, are a card.
You should be dealt with.
🙂
Hi Matt! I missed you too!
