A couple readings and special events tonight.

Down at Elliott Bay Book Company, Elisabeth Hyde reads from her latest In the Heart of the Canyon. In this novel a rafting trip serves as the vehicle for life-altering experiences. For you or for the characters? Only by attending the reading will you know.

William T. Vollmann reads from his latest 1100 page tome, Imperial, at Barnes & Noble in U-Village. Vollmann chronicles the history of the southernmost county in California โ€” a hotbed of nefarious activities between the US and Mexico. Tonight heโ€™ll be chatting with Charles R. Cross.

Event-wise, at the Ballard Branch of Seattle Public Library is the continuation of the Itโ€™s About Time Writers Series, featuring Brandon Scott Gorrell, Joannie Stangeland, Joan Swift, and Jeremy Halinen.

Then the reading/event of the night is the Opium Literary Death Match at the Rendevous Jewelbox Theatre. Ryan Boudinot (The Littlest Hitler), Matthew Simmons (A Jello Horse), Peter Gajdics (Opium8โ€™s 250-word contest winner), and Matt Briggs (Shoot the Buffalo) will read while local celebrities such as Luke Smith, Mary Guterson, and The Strangerโ€™s Lindy West will judge away. One author will actually be unmasked and killed in the ring!

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.
