All right, technically, Jimmy Carter isn’t “reading” tonight at University Book Store. He’s doing a signing-only event. But, still: Jimmy Carter! Our most cardigan-friendly former president signs his newest book, White House Diary.

Other events in town tonight include Lisa Birnbach at Elliott Bay Book Company. Birnbach, the author of the trend-tastically popular 80s bestseller The Official Preppy Handbook has a new book titled True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World.

Lish McBride is at Third Place Books tonight. Hold Me Closer Necromancer is a sci-fi book with either a really good title or a really horrible title. I cannot tell.

And at Victrola Coffee & Art on 15th, we have a group reading and open mic for an anthology titled hell strung & crooked. This anthology was partly edited by someone named Ice.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

And if you’re planning on staying in and you’re looking for something to read, you can get personalized book recommendations from myself and a team of 5 expert booksellers from Third Place Books over at Questionland. 1. Garry Wills had a pretty scathing review of Carter’s book in the New York Review of Books a while back. It’s great if you want to hear about his hemmorrhoids or his abiding interest in parapsychology as a tool of government. Not so good if you’re looking for evidence that Carter knew what the hell he was doing.
