As part of a promotion for an upcoming Mad Men ripoff TV show, next month’s issue of Playboy* will cost 60 cents. I’m excited to note that the cover says it features “new work” from Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Ames, and Philip K. Dick, which means I’ll be buying my first issue of Playboy in…ever.
* Cue the “whoa, they still publish Playboy?!?” jokes.

Better reading than Maxim. Plus, hey, naked chicks.
I wouldn’t even know who sells the magazine any more. I haven’t seen one in ages.
i’m a straight chick, and i enjoy my playboy subscription. people make jokes about “reading” playboy for the articles, but they make jokes because there’s a pretty hefty kernel of truth there. it’s not every issue, but there’s usually at least one very good piece, whether it’s the interview, the news article, or the short fiction. once every couple of years you get an issue with genuinely excellent everything. plus, you know, boobs.
New work… by Philip K. Dick? Surely they mean “previously unpublished”…
Still, guess I’m going to pay for pornography next month. Gross.
Kids today do not understand the joy and sense of accomplishment that came from finding a Playboy in your uncle’s garage. Now they can just sit in front of a computer and google a donkey show or whatever it is they want to see.
@5 So true.
One of my greatest memories as a young lad was stomping through the woods by my home where I found a treasure trove of discarded and forgotten titty mags. I felt as if I’d discovered the Lost City of Gold.
What’s strange is that there was actually a point in time where Playboy was consistently publishing some of the best science fiction authors of the day. Philip K. Dick is a prime example.
If the “new work” is a previously unpublished short story I will happily purchase the pages upon pages of softcore lady parts.
@4:
Does Playboy even count as “pornography” in the modern era?
@3: “people make jokes about “reading” playboy for the articles, but they make jokes because there’s a pretty hefty kernel of truth there”
Eh, whenever i’ve checked in the last ten years, it’s way sub-Rolling Stone level commentary. I’d rather just avoid all the generic airbrushed to ridiculousness bunnies and stick with Matt Taibbi.
People used to make that joke thirty years ago when Playboy was more intellectually relevant, I haven’t seen the same strength of writing. People also joke that they only go to Hooters for the “great wings”, but franchise loyalty is just a sign that they don’t know what good wings are! :p
New work from Philip K. Dick … ?!?
That’s a neat trick since he died in 1982.
Philip K. DIck!? Awesome!
eh, 10 beat me, but still, awesome.
wait a minute…there’s a straight male working at the stranger?
I always “read” it for the cartoons. I loved them. Plus, well, I mean come on. Boobs.
I like how Constant can’t even write a paragraph without being so fucking above it all. What else have you never purchased Paul? Enlighten us some more with your impeccable taste.

14/15: Wow, you’re REALLY defensive about cheap, past-its-prime smut.
@10
Hmmmmmm. How would that have slipped by the editors?
OK Phillip K. Dick made a splash in our attention but what is up with Margret Atwood? In Playboy? I know Canadians are cool and everything but I thought she would have some objection to being published in a girly mag.
@3 I feel the exact same way. I used to send my issues of Playboy to my husband in Iraq or afghanistan AFTER I read them. None of his buddies would believe that not only would his wife send him playboy, but it was MY subscription!
I also had girlfriends who recoiled in horror when they saw the playboys in my house. without exception I forced them to thumb through the magazine only to realize they’d never so much at looked at one before. They were all pretty surprised to finally see how tame it actually was. I guess they thought it was like one of those nasty ones where women spread their S**t all open, ew.
and @8, I don’t consider it porn, maybe 50 years ago it might’ve been porn.
@20 It’s called Wingdome. And in certain locations you can get cilantro/jalapeno lemonade.
@20: “If you can name another place in Seattle that serves hot wings in a vinager based sauce and can be bought in mass consumption, I’d like to hear it.”

All better than Hooters, national franchises are easily avoidable, especially if you don’t give a shit about short shorts. If you prefer franchises and short shorts, be honest about it. But don’t pretend that Hooters are anything special. The franchise exists because people like predictable food and tits, just as Playboy still exists because there are people who enjoy airbrushed cooters and pablum. Yeah, I’m definitely elitist but those excuses for breastaurants are tiresome. Embrace the theme, because you can find better food anywhere else in the city.
@2 So that makes Playboy just like your dick.
