But it’s not my fault, I swear!
If you’ve picked up the beautiful and shiny and new summer edition of Seattle Art + Performance, the arts quarterly produced by The Stranger that lists every reading and festival and play and classical music performance and comedy show and film for the next three months, you’re doing the right thing.
However, if you’re taking off work early on July 18 so you can be sure to catch every word of Vendela Vida’s reading at Elliott Bay bookstore, then you are doing the wrong thing. This right here is wrong:
Vendela Vida’s coming to town June 18. The 18th of June. The 18th day of June in the year of our Lord, 2015. Not July. Don’t think July.
I just got here, so I’m delighted to say it wasn’t I who made this error, this error that will continue to confuse people through July 18 because it has been permanently printed on bound pieces of paper. I don’t want to name names so I won’t. Really, I don’t know how anyone could confuse a month named for the Roman Goddess of Childbirth with a month named for a doomed ruler of the Republic, but evidently someone did.
And because I’m the new guy, it fell to me to issue this correction. To own up to a mistake that wasn’t mine. To ask forgiveness for something I did not do. Is this what it means to work for The Stranger? Is this what it means to be an American? Well, come to think of it, yes. As Americans, if we allow ourselves to inherit the material and intellectual wealth of those who have come before us, then we must also inherit their debts and darknesses as well. You know what I’m talking about.
Anyway, June 18 for Vida, not July 18. See you next week, not next month.
