After a week of speculation, DC Comics unveiled their new logo today in a press release. (You can read more about it, including what it might mean for the rumored Watchmen sequel series, at at Bleeding Cool.) It’s a “D” peeled back from a “C,” with an eye toward animation on digital and cartoon properties. Here are a few details, from photos provided by DC Comics:

The new logo makes a little more sense when shown on a comic book. It’s positioned at the very edge:

The fans, as usual, have met the news of change with wild outrage. Their argumentsโthat the logo is bland and corporate, that you can’t tell it’s supposed to be a D on top of the C, that logos shouldn’t have 3D elements in themโdo make some sense. Myself, I’m a fan of the DC bullet logo, although that could very well be just because it’s the logo that was on the books while I was growing up. So how do we settle this internet controversy? Even though this has been a day replete with Slog polls, I think there’s only one way to bring this matter to a legally binding conclusion:

It’s no Gap logo, but it’s still probably some kind of witch.
Where’s the “Who gives a fuck about DC comics?” option? Dinosaurs of the comics industry.
Has anyone on the other boards pointed out that the blood mark on the grey/orange logo seems to be derivative of Watchmen?

I wouldn’t go so far as to say “comics are for kids” — Chris Ware, yadda yadda — but DC Comics are for, not kids, but grotesquely stunted adults.
I think it’s brilliant… the D peeling away from the C speaks to the secret identity of superheros. Plus it looks contemporary and cool. And I’m a huge fan of simple sans serif fonts. Well done, DC!

I suppose there are also people out there who get upset when the parent corporations change the images of the Morton’s Salt Girl, Betty Crocker and the Gorton’s Fisherman, but I can’t understand why. Have these people nothing important to occupy their thoughts?
Hopefully when this ugly logo goes away, they will switch back to something more like the bullet logo — that at least had a bit of history.

You know a logo is weak when they have to print the company’s name next to it in block letters just so you know who they are. The previous “bullet” logos didn’t need any explanation. They made a clear statement that this was DC.
We’re going to look back on this as the beginning of the end. Or, perhaps, the end of the end.
@3 and @11: Maybe my sarcasm detector is on the fritz, but Watchmen was originally published as a DC comic. And, yeah, that’s why that logo is up there looking like a Watchmen reference.
