Apparently, Wonder Woman is getting a new costume and origin. Because there is nothing more important going on right now, this story, which started in The New York Times, is all over the internet. Here is a cover showing the new costume: (Click to enlarge.)

Now the reactions are coming in, including former TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter:

“I think it will take time for people to get over not seeing a lot of leg,” she told ABC News. “[But] I think it’s going to be very sexy and it’s new and I love the little cap sleeve. You know, she’s a hip girl.”

And fanboys, as usual, are overreacting to what will no doubt be a temporary change:

I actually just threw up…how dare you do this. THIS IS DISGRACEFUL. I hope you lose the rights to WW. I am now done collecting comics. GOOD JOB!

WW is supposed to be the ultimate male fantasy. Now she looks more like Elana Kagan. I give this new look one year (two tops!).

As always: Stay classy, nerds. This whole Wonder Woman thing is about as meaningful and long-lasting as this, this, or this.

  1. At least she doesn’t show mid-riff. Nerds are strangely obsessed with that for some reason. That rack, on the other hand, would make Linda Carter blush.

  2. Speaking as an over-age nerd fanboy, overreacting is what we do, albeit in a snarky, disdainful and condescending manner. Otherwise, we’d just be sad losers.

  3. I’m actually really happy that her origin is getting rebooted. HATED the original version and so I’m cautiosly optomistic about this one.

As for the costume, it’s a little meh but I think it goes along with the new story nicely.

  4. Funniest thing about the “fan” outrage is the idea that any of them are buying/reading Wonder Woman to begin with.

I think I remember reading that WW’s comic only gets printed to hold onto the copyright, that the sales are ludicrously low.

  5. 1. The line “supposed to be the ultimate male fantasy” makes me want to kick some kneecaps. Fuck that guy, I bet he’s a sweaty little creep.

    2. Those breasts would cause some back pain.

    3. The new costume isn’t awful, and as long as Lynda Carter is cool with it, I’m cool with it.

  6. “Because there is nothing more important going on right now, “
The reason that “news” like this spreads so quickly is because it is something that can be viewed, judged and quickly forgotten. If there’s nothing that nerds are better at it is making a snap decision about something that they know nothing about. It’s far easier to have strong opinion on pr-stunts like this than doing research on a Big Issue and formulating an informed opinion.
Since I happen to be a nerd as well, I’ve made my snap decision, too. I like it. The leggings scream 2009, and will look super dated very quickly, but the rest of it sits well.

  7. Well, I buy and read Wonder Woman. I have for years. I’ve seen lots weird things come and go, and I’ve been okay with most of them, but this costume and the storyline are kind of pissing me off.

But whatever, as soon as this creative team is gone, there will be other changes. I’m just disappointed that all of the awesomeness that Gail Simone introduced is being set on fire and pushed down a hill.

  8. It’s not awful, it’s just incredibly dated. Mix mid eighties Michael Jackson and Madonna get ups and add a nineties choker: Voila!

  9. I pretty much hate the new costume. But it must be said that the most recent versions of WW have been downright pornagraphic. The watermelon sized breasts, the panties cut up past the hipbone… it just got skimpier and skimpier, trashier and trashier. I actually loved the original, with the skirt that could be whipped off revealing humanly proportioned undies underneath and the gladiator sandals (not high heeled boots).

I’m totally for dropping the fanboy wet dream/pornstar WW. But I do love the iconography of the original….

  10. I like it a lot. Now if we could only fix Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Supergirl, Wonder Girl, Power Girl and pretty much every other female superheroine as well….

  11. Her boobs are kind of ridiculous.

@2: I find fashion in comic books tends to be stuck in the 1990s. It’s not nearly as noticeable with men’s fashion, but I’m similarly mystified by the midriff obsession. Get a shirt of correct length!

  12. Hmm. I’m a big fan of Jim Lee, so that they got him to design it gets points from me.

That said, I’m not sure what to make of the shoulder pads on her jacket, though that jacket seems to go well with the bracers, in my opinion. The pants are…okay, I guess, but I don’t like the fact that it looks like they go straight into the boots (with a gold ankle bracelet for a little pizazz), because it makes it look like she’s wearing pleather footy pajamas.

The bit around her torso is the best, I think. The W design is, as the NYT mentioned, very understated. The belt is a sleek way to preserve that eagle design she used to have. I can’t stop thinking “Spider-Man” when I look at the red part, though. I think it’s the lines that go down her front; they look too much like the web motif that I can’t get it out of my mind.

I couldn’t care less that they retooled her origin story. So many DC origin stories are so ridiculous anyway that I just don’t dwell on them. The Greek myth background always seemed a bit weird to me.

And that is the most thought I’ve given to Wonder Woman in my entire life.

  13. I’m digging the leather pants and jean jacket, but those tits violate continuity – nobody’s bosom-ier than Power Girl. And did she make that top from an old Spider-man outfit?

  14. Knightfall brought us Azrael and some of the first real conversation about Dick Grayson taking over the mantle of Batman, echoes of which you can see in everything that’s happened in the Batbooks since Final Crisis.

The Death of Superman gave us the Cyborg Superman, who was last seen torturing Green Lanterns just this month.

    They lasted.

  15. If there’s anything less “realistic” for a superhero costume than a tiny leotard it’s a pair of leather pants. Way to go guys. I am interested to see the reboot though.

  16. Well, AHEM, SPOILERS—

Its not a reboot, Its an alternate reality, it will get merged with regular WW reality around issue 12 or 16. The costume makes sense since in this alternate reality, she is a normal teenager (With huge boobs).

Also about boobs, she has super strength, duhhh.

WW isnt read by many people because it is just TERRIBLE. Gail Simone got a good shot at it and turned it into a real comic, but it still wasn’t that interesting. PROMETHEA is an example of an interesting WW story. So until they decide to take a risk and actually give WW some leeway to do whatever, the book will always suck.

  17. Oh nice example of its suckyness? ALL ANYONE CAN EVER COMMENT ON WONDER WOMAN IS HER COSTUME.

So if the DC let the Wonder Woman comic take the kind of leap they let her clothes take we might have an interesting comic.
