The holiday season is dead ahead, the three-tier shopping attack of Black Friday-Small Business Saturday-Cyber Monday is over, and we’ve arrived at the oft-overlooked but vitally important and globally observed Giving Tuesday. The idea is that, after spending all those hard-earned dollars on frivolous gifts for your friends and fam, you can put some money where it matters and help out a charity in need.
Don’t have a charity in mind? The Stranger staff is here to help you with a guide to some of our favorites, many of them located right in our backyard. Check them out below…
THE LADIES
Powerful Voices
“Unfortunately, women and girls are being told by this administration that their safety and rights do not matter, and what’s worse—boys and men are hearing the same message. This organization works to protect and support girls and women, in many ways, from creating a foundation of empowerment, to educating about abuse and assault, to providing resources to combat these problems.” DEVIN
The Northwest Abortion Access Fund,
“It helps people pay for abortions (and transportation to and from the clinic). Because a right isn’t really a right without access.” HEIDI
Lady Parts Justice League
“A donation to Lady Parts Justice League helps fight the assault on reproductive rights while supporting independent abortion clinics in need.” DAN
Girls Who Code
“Because women should have a voice in the future of tech, too.” ANNA
ENVIRONMENT
Washington Wild
“Because our waters and ancient forests are also at risk.” JOULE
Wolf Conservation Center
“Wolf Conservation Center works to protect all species of wolf (which are especially threatened and over-hunted in the Pacific Northwest) during this time in which our federal Endangered Species Act is under attack thanks to the current presidential administration.” KIM
Puget Soundkeeper Alliance
“Because this region has unparalleled access to clean drinking water, and we should ensure it remains accessible to all and protected from industrial and residential pollution.” RYAN
JOURNALISM
Freedom of the Press Foundation
“Because we’re under attack.” STEVEN
EDUCATION
The Seattle Public Library Foundation
“SPL is one of our city’s most essential resources for free, inclusive, and accessible education.” KIM
IMMIGRANT RIGHTS
Northwest Immigrant Rights Project
“Now more than ever, we need to help fight for immigrant rights and legal protections—who knows what the Trumpsters may have in store?” AMBER
MUSIC
MusiCares
“…for offering musicians—a notoriously under-insured demographic—funds for financial, medical, and personal emergencies.” DAVE
HOMELESS CRISIS
Path With Art
“People who are looking for a place to live need more than just a shelter.” RICH
Mary’s Place
“Because Seattle is experiencing a homelessness emergency and Mary’s Place has a great track record empowering women and children.” RYAN
New Horizons
“I donate pretty regularly to New Horizons. They work with homeless youths to get them off the streets. They have a shelter, they do one on one counseling, they help find jobs and training, they even have a cafe they employ some of their kids in. I have a few friends that have worked there over the years, so I know their work is genuine and good and that the people that work there work hard and have a true passion for the social work they are doing. They also have lots of volunteer opportunities for people to get involved beyond just writing a check.” DARCI
ANIMALS
Old Dog Haven
and
Chimpanzee Sanctuary NW
“”Because no one will ever love you like an old dog that you’ve given a forever home to … Chimpanzee Sanctuary NW cares for seven chimps at a time that were discarded from the entertainment and biomedical testing industries, allowing them to live out the rest of their days in comfort and relative freedom; they hope to expand their capacity to take in more chimps in the future and have already secured additional land to build on. ” JULIETTE
Pasado’s Safe Haven
“Local organization that provides medical care and sanctuary for animals that were victims of cruelty or neglect, investigates/processes cases of animal cruelty, and performs spay/neutering and distributes pet food to low-income families. They are looking out for our furry friends.” GILLIAN
GAMING
The Able Gamers Charity
“A charity that provides custom controllers and tech that allow people living with disabilities to play video games. Because everyone deserves to have fun.” CALLAN
