To the fuckers who invaded my friends’ home when I came to visit:
Why the fuck did you have to do that? It scared me to no end. It also
pissed me off. If you all four hadn’t had guns, we would’ve had a
completely different situation. Instead, you got all six of us tied up
while you stole what you deemed worth jacking. What also pisses me off
is that you were all black. Why the fuck would you feed the stereotype?
I couldn’t see more than your eyes and a little bit around them, so I
found myself racial-profiling out of fear. I stopped doing that,
because I’m stronger and better than that. I just want you to know that
you’re fucked up. I work hard as an attractive woman to be intelligent
and interesting, because I don’t like perpetuating negative
stereotypes. I wish you would work just as hard to rid the world of the
stereotype that black men should be feared because they’ll put a gun to
your head and steal your shit. I hope you’re nice to the people you
know.

Stereotypes Suck
Comments are closed.

sounds like the U-district home invasion from earlier this year
She’s obviously not too successful in her attempts to be more intelligent as she has completely missed the point of I, Anonymous.
thnx for the advice <3
-black people
wow… smug and racist at the same time. they broke into your house to steal your shit. how hard is that to comprehend?
@3 hehe.. (WKUK ref ) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi1c25wJp…
now for a serious response. Dear anonymous. Sometimes when you’re force fed stereotypes about yourself day in day out, the desire for identity (which is often stronger than the desire to be left alone) overtakes you and you find yourself stepping into the role of the image superimposed on you by society. That’s why so much crime looks like it’s been stolen from tv, stereotypes, mythology. it has. And stereotyping someone as a criminal is more effective at inducing acting out, than stereotyping you as a sex obejct with nothing in your head. That’s why societys that overcriminalise people end up increasing the problems they tried to reduce. People start identifying as criminals, because society places that label on them, and then they start acting like criminals.
Sad but true. The American negro seems unable or unwilling to move themselves out of these unfortunate but true stereotypes. Get ready for countless illegitimate baby mamas to create the next generation of thugs.
I work hard as an attractive woman to be intelligent…..I don’t know what that means. This was a terrible I, Anonymous.
The Stranger readers above are stereotyping themselves as smug, superior & mean dipshits.
Why do you DO that???
if they had been white the robbery would have reflected on only their own character, not on other people who happen to be white. why is it okay to expect every member of a race to not commit crimes. if i am robbed by people wearing converse, is it reasonable to stereotype all people who wear converse? you are ignorant.
Who is editing this column these days? Whoever it is should be FIRED. It’s so incredibly dull that I cannot possibly be bored enough to read it ever again.
# 6: Nice reference to the play “Bells are Ringing.”
And there are plenty of white American armed thugs. Some of them are shooting at Iraqis right now, and you are paying for it.
I’m actually tracking on this one because I, too, try to judge individuals, not groups and it bothers me something fierce when a prevailent stereotype intrudes on my actual life- A relatively common example: Over the years, I’ve learned that if I smell curry in the lobby or see a sari on the female desk clerk, I should seek out a different motel because I won’t be happy with the room. I HATE making a decision about patronising a business based on the ethnicity or national origin of the owner/manager of the establishment but the cultural standards of cleanliness and hospitality are simply too different.
And, at a very young age, I was robbed at gunpoint by two young black guys- after having been carefully taught my whole childhood NOT to make assumptions based on race, it sat poorly with me to feel uneasy everytime I saw a young black male approaching for several months after the incident.
@ 5. spot on. except that being stereotyped as a sex object is just as effective in getting someone to act the part. That ‘part’ happens to be generally a little less violent, but still destructive.
They weren’t “black”, they were n*gg*rs! There’s a difference.
I’m sorry you were robbed and threatened, and I’m sorry history, economics and racism made the situation worse. I hope you’ll consider counselling. No one should be threatened with guns.
(Except maybe Dick Cheney.)
This is much funnier if you replace these people with fruit.
“To the fuckers who invaded my friends’ home when I came to visit: Why the fuck did you have to do that? It scared me to no end. It also pissed me off. If you all four hadn’t had guns, we would’ve had a completely different situation. Instead, you got all six of us tied up while you made us eat strawberries. What also pisses me off is that you were all blueberries. Why the fuck would you feed the stereotype? I couldn’t see more than your eyes and a little bit around them, so I found myself fruit-profiling out of fear. I stopped doing that, because I’m stronger and better than that. I just want you to know that you’re fucked up. I work hard as an attractive peach to be intelligent and interesting, because I don’t like perpetuating negative stereotypes. I wish you would work just as hard to rid the world of the stereotype that blueberries should be feared because they’ll put a gun to your head and feed you strawberries. I hope you’re nice to the people you know.”
I also work hard as an attractive woman to be intelligent and interesting, because I don’t like perpetuating negative stereotypes.
She is stereotyping herself; she works hard at being intelligent and interesting so her good looks do not make people think she is just a bimbo, the typical stereotype by which good looking woman are measured.
Hahahaha. Sarah Palin (#18) nailed it.
They are time savers, though!
would somebody please stick this chic up again and set her pompous ass straight?
this is like a rape fetish story with no payoff =(
count your blessings they didn’t jam their big black stove-pipes up your lilly white bung hole and kidnap you like they did in san diego last year!
“I work hard as an attractive woman to be intelligent and interesting, because I don’t like perpetuating negative stereotypes.”
Best line ever!
Synopsis: ‘You suck. I am hot. You made me racist. Did I mention I am hot? Black people suck, but it’s not my fault.’
this I, Anonymous summed up:
“Dear black people,
you cannot commit crimes! ever! whenever one of you does something bad i hold it against all of you! if a white gang had robbed me though, that would be fine, because at least they have the decency of not fulfilling a stereotype.”
im sure all the black homeless people in pioneer square ponder on the perpetuated stereotypes they contribute to every day… wait… no they don’t… count your blessings you came out alive your “shit” is replaceable
Bravo to the best satire of Seattle PC ever.
“… I found myself racial-profiling out of fear. I stopped doing that, because I’m stronger and better than that…. I hope you’re nice to the people you know.”
Just… wow.
secretly racist, but needs to be said. How come chinks come here and in 5 years own a house?
fuck off love and happiness… what kinda hippie dippie stupid name is that? bet you work at microsoft. pussy.
love and happiness….nice stupid hippie name, loser….
Wild Asphalt Ape? That’s a good one, though Porch Monkey is still my favorite.
And, just for the record anglopride, being fat and ugly never stopped a rapist. Just ask your mom.
Asphalt apes? That’s a good one. Porch monkey is still my favorite, though.
Seriously, being fat and ugly never stopped a rapist, anglopride. Just ask your mom.
Sorry for being a racist douche and posting twice.
Shouldn’t people work hard to be intelligent and interesting no matter what they look like or what their sex is?
I’m just sayin’.
After reading Anglo Prides post I had visions of concrete people running up to the I, Anon poster and knocking (rapping) on her with their knuckles.. LOLZ.
Re: I Anon’s quote: “I work hard as an attractive woman to be intelligent and interesting, because I don’t like perpetuating negative stereotypes.”
I can’t say I understand why this quote has attracted all this attention/laughs…
To point out the obvious. We live in a society in which many people see an attractive woman and accuse her of having no intelligence or personality. We all know this. I mean, I anon phrased it badly, because intelligence isn’t something you achieve through trying. But her point is easy enough to understand. She realises good looks are treated as code for dim witted, and she tries to overcome the stereotype. I see no problem with that.
Have some facts.

From the article “List of 2008 homicides in Seattle” from the Seattle PI
selected from the list of the 28 Seattle homicides in 2008….
Allen Joplin, Jan. 4 — black killed by black
De’Che Morrison, Jan. 10 — black killed by black
Maurice “Moe” Allen Jr., Jan. 26 — black killed by black
Degene Barecha, Jan. 30 — black killed by black
Perry Henderson, Feb. 6 — black killed by black
Stephan Dwaine Stewart, April 2 — black killed by black
Eldora Earlycutt, July 4 — black killed by black
James Paroline, July 10 — white killed by black
Troy Peters, July 22 — black killed by black
Pierre Lapoint, Aug. 5 — black killed by black
Jane Kariuki, Oct. 16 — woman of unknown race killed by black man named Christel D. Murphy
Quincy S. Coleman, Oct. 31 — black killed by black
Edward McMichael, the “Tuba Man”, Nov. 3 — white killed by multiple blacks
Nathaniel Lee Thomas, Nov. 23 — black killed by black
So by my count blacks (8% of Seattle) were the killers in at least half (that’s at least 50%) of the murders in the Seattle area in 2008. At least five of the other murderers were latinos.
The numbers are actually worse for 2009 and do approach the 85% mark. Up to June there have been at least 5 murders in Seattle and in at least three of them the murder was black.
Just look at all the attention that Slog has given those two white lesbians who were raped and stabbed (one killed) by that black guy that your loony white-guilt courts let go!!!
Actually the only reason you even paid any attention to it was because they were lesbians, even going so far as shrieking about how it was an anti-gay hate crime, totally ignoring the more obvious possibility that if it was any kind of hate crime at all, it was a black-on-white hate crime.
@29
Asians can own a house in 5 years because they don’t do anything but work and they only pay for housing and food. IOW, they don’t have fancy iPods or designer clothes or gourmet coffees or any of the things that make modern life enjoyable.
As someone who isn’t Asian but has spent the last year of my life working 6+ days a week and only paying for rent, food and Internet access, I’ve saved up enough money for a down payment on a house. Then again, it’s been an incredibly boring year as well and all of my “friends” have rejected me because I don’t want to spend any time with them or do anything besides work. Win some, lose some.
Wow, this does not speak very well for the readers of the Stranger.
To number 6. Are you referring to the 39,000,000 African Americans in this country, who are residents here for thousands of different reasons and are living 39 million separate lives as “the American Negro?” because if you are you may want to pick up a 3rd grade english book and review the chapter called “plurals.”
Number 22,23 and 24 seem to have such a close understanding of multi-ethnic rape that I can only assume that they were all anally attacked by a pack of black bull-dykes wielding 18 inch dildos. If this is the case you have my sympathy. If this is not the case then go back to your snuff porn and leave the rest of the world alone.
To everybody did not stop to think that the anonymous writer is an Afrcan American Woman frustrated at the irony of being a victim of the stereotypes she tries to break with her everyday life, you all need to fuck off for a minute and then ask yourself why you project your own weaknesses onto other people.
And to anybody who has labeled this woman as a bitch because she ranted in an UN-P.C. way in an anonymous column after being attacked and robbed, you all are not the Carvells, Clintons and Kennedy
s you think you are. You’re just whiney white people who are probably mad because your column about the crush you have on the neighbors dog did got get picked this week.
Blacks make up only 12% of the USA but commit over 52% of all murders and over 34% of all rapes every year in the United States.
If a black is murdered in the USA, there is at least a 94% chance the murderer is also black.
Funny how 18% of the population of Seattle commits 65% of the violent crimes. It must be somebody else’s fault, because if it was their own fault, I’d apparently be racist.
If you are referring to blacks, they make up about 8% (eight percent) of Seattle, not 18% (eighteen percent).
You should have told them you voted for Obama. I bet that would have changed their minds…
Really – what is the point of this piece? You get jacked by some black thugs and it reaffirms your latent racism?
We all know the history and that any underclass will resort to crime more than the majority. This is the case in any country – color be damned. When you are the victim, your ugliest emotions will likely spout forth first.
Seattle folks do their best to combat these base instincts, I am convinced, but when I’m home and am walking on the street at night and come across a group of young black men, you can bet that I will at least consider crossing the road. Does this make me racist? Perhaps, but it is a practical consideration.
I live in a racially homogenous country these days, one in which violent crime is practically unheard of. When I go home I have to recalibrate my meters…
The most salient point made by some of the commenters is that black-on-black crime is WAY more prevalent than black-on-white crime in America. Blame hundreds of years of poverty and oppression, blame the purveyance of hip-hop “thug culture,” but it remains a relevant force in the country.
But you gotta at least try to see it in context.
That said, being victimized will make anyone angry. This is how vicious circles are formed…
I don’t pretend to have a great point. Just ranting into internetland…
TO;SEATTLE SILLY (AKA post 41)
you sure do got everyone figured out here don’t ya? that a common practice of yours? look for oped pieces with plenty of comments and poke holes in everyones thoughts? aren’t you the great judge of all the message boards?! you believe everything you read? make snap judgements on a comment that obviously was sarcastic? well, judge this serious silly; FUCK OFF AND DIE!
Growler, how do you know this was a snap judgment? You made your post at 3:44 p.m. on August 27, 2009 and Seattle Silly made his/her post at 7:55 p.m. on August 29, 2009. They had plenty of time to make a well-thought out judgment.
Also, sarcasm is never totally obvious to all, that’s part of it’s effect.
Oh, and telling people to “die” using all caps? Anonymous aggression from a safe distance is the height of cowardice (not that I should judge you too harshly in this regard, since during my adolescence, I hit people with eggs from moving cars … but that’s neither here not there).
There’s truth in sterotypes. How do you think they became stereotypes to begin with? She’s right, it does take personal responsibility for a group to transcend their stereotypes. Not all racist comments come from a place of hatred, sometimes they come from a place of being statistically true and fucking obvious.
To use a term that might be poignant and appropriate… it’s time to REPRESENT, yo!
According to the USDOJ, in the year 2005 ALONE, black men raped or sexually assaulted at least 37,000 white women. That same year, white men raped or sexually assaulted between zero and ten black women.
I hope you’re nice to the people you know? Wtf is that about?
You can’t make up your mind whether to be passive or aggressive, huh?
Find a poem by Pat Parker and reflect. It’ll help.
It’s called-
‘For the white person who wants to be my friend’
first line-
The first thing you do is forget that I am Black.
Second, you must never forget that I’m Black.
(there’s a line in there about being beaten or abused by a Black person, it’s very good. Again, find it and read it)
It’s also not any minority person’s job (minority with race, gender, sexual shit, etc) to rid the world of the stereotype, or contribute to ridding of it. It’s every fucking person’s job to do the best they can and be a good human being, in spite of the shit on their plate. Sounds like those assholes were not being great human beings.
And in case you think the first directions in the poem by Parker are too complicated/difficult to follow or even consider following, keep in mind how fucking difficult it is to be gay/queer, to LOOK gay or queer (people don’t always have both), to be a person of color, to look foreign, to be poor, to be a woman, to be disabled, and so fucking on….
If you are actually interested in friendships beyond your own comfortable categories, the process is going to feel a little uncomfortable at times. But it will be a genuine friendship, not some pc- I cough uncomfortably when ‘insert your minority topic here’ comes up and we’re around each other relationship.
