I used to love potlucks, but the health freaks and vegetarians spoil
everything. First, one person guilted us by bringing tofu and
chickpeas, then one by one you all fell into the trap. Now we have to
choose between four dips that look like puke and 12 different kinds of
fruit. If we are lucky, there are two kinds of flavored energy water.
When I bring something with fat or carbs in it, you treat me like a
rapist—but guess who never has to take leftovers home because you
gobble it down like you haven’t eaten in a week? The only “lucky” thing
about it is that I pass Taco Bell on my way home!

  1. And I thought that I was alone with this social problem. Thanks for the rant! I feel better now. I have had the same problem also with potlucks until the latest one where I groaned and grumped, “ANOTHER one? OK, OK, this one last time, husband, I will contribute something, but if it is not touched, and I have to throw it all away wasting my time and your money, never again!” Well, imagine my surprise when the minute I had warm up my tuna casserole (with all natural and organic ingredients BTW) and placed it on the table with all the vegan dips and chips and vegetarian pasta salads, it was gobbled up! I guess the lesson learnt was to gauge the people who will be there and then prepare or not prepare what I will bring … a vegetable platter and dip is all I will invest in ever again for those who don’t eat any kind of meat or milk and eggs products.

  2. No need to get upset. Just bring the sort of food YOU like to eat. Then you’ll have a guarantee that there will be at least one thing there you like. If other people don’t like it or can’t eat it, they can eat what they bring. I don’t understand the concept of people feeling guilty for bringing stuff other people don’t like – I mean unless someone might go into anaphalaxic shock because of a food allergy. In that case, I would avoid the msg or peanuts or whatever – otherwise, don’t let people guilt trip you.
