Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mike Leake, 23, was charged with misdemeanor theft after being caught on video removing security tags from six American Rag T-shirts, valued at $59.88, and leaving a Macy’s without paying. Leake, who received a $2.9 million signing bonus in 2009 and is scheduled to earn $425,000 in 2011, is 2–0 this season with a 5.40 ERA.
Former Major League Baseball all-star Lenny “Nails” Dykstra, 48, was released on $150,000 bail on federal fraud charges alleging he stole $400,000 of property subject to his bankruptcy case, including a $50,000 granite sink. Authorities allege that Dykstra, the hero of the New York Mets 1986 World Series victory, had cocaine and ecstasy in his possession when he was arrested by Los Angeles police in an unrelated grand-theft auto case.
Archbishop Carroll High School athletic director Francis Murphy, 39, was arrested by detectives on charges including unlawful contact with a minor, promoting prostitution, and corruption of minors. Murphy is alleged to have used Facebook to solicit sex from a former Archbishop Carroll student in exchange for becoming the boy’s “sugar daddy.” The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has placed Murphy on administrative leave.
