May Day is both a pagan celebration of springtime and International Workers’ Day. If you’re looking for something involving flower crowns and a maypole, the folks behind the summertime Fremont Solstice Parade are putting on their annual May Day event at Woodland Park, where you can witness the crowning of the Green Man and May Queen. On the more political side, labor organization El Comité is organizing their 20th annual May Day March for the Rights of Immigrants and Workers in Judkins Park. If you’re interested in learning more about economic history, check out one of the film screenings and talks put on by the month-long communist-associated festival Red May in order to encourage Seattleites to “take a vacation from capitalism,” or visit the UW Allen Library’s continuing Seattle General Strike Era & Centilia Tragedy of 1919 exhibit (through June 7).
