c7ad/1236290521-spider-mantv.jpgMarvel Comics is streaming episodes of the 1970s Japanese Spider-Man live action TV show, in which Spider-Man is a motorcycle race driver who fights an evil gang called the Iron Cross with the help of a giant space robot named Leopardon. I love how all of Japan was on hallucinogenic drugs during the 1970s.

  1. A lot Japanese culture doesn’t readily translate, at least not in mere subtitles, to American audiences. It’s as much true of Kurosawa as it is of these 70s superhero riffs. (Also very true of manga and anime.) It helps to have a bicultural person handy to explain things that at first seem outlandish but then, when you get more context, seem well-situated or even clever.

  2. It’s not that weird, really. It’s actually mad boring. Night rider is way weirder. But I speak japanese, so that might make it more normal, i dunno.
