As a parent—as parent with a porn collection—this mash up of Frosty the Snowman and the sitcom How I Met Your Mother does seem in poor taste…

This is an ad produced by CBS to promote one of its sitcoms. Right-wing Christian groups are outraged—aren’t they always?—but I think they have a point. This is kinda offensive and not in an interesting way. But maybe it would be less offensive if it were, you know, funnier. (Via JoeMyGod.)

  1. I am also a parent with a porn collection, but wasn’t even mildly offended by this. Yes, it inappropriate for kids, but thats a different issue.

I do agree that it didn’t work as humor. As someone who laughed at these same jokes in HIMYM, I wanted to be amused, but wasn’t.

  2. Well, the newsbusters.org link does the usual Mrs. Lovejoy “Won’t someone think of the children?” bit but also has a link to the video. How convenient. What a bunch of hypocrites. At least they laid off the whole angle about Frosty being overdubbed by a gay man.

  3. I love “How I Met Your Mother,” but I can’t imagine that these would still be funny if you didn’t know Neil Patrick Harris’s character on the show. Out of the context of the character, this is probably just creepy and weird.

  4. That was really bad, and by that I mean badly done.

If it were a mash-up by “just some guy” then I could understand the lack of a through-line to make it funny. That it was done by CBS, and that they have access to a full catalog of Barney’s lines (I don’t watch HIMYM, but am familiar with it) and COULD have put this together in a way that was humorous rather than humorless, that is the offensive part of it. Opportunity wasted.

  5. Hopefully CBS doing this will help put the final nail in the coffin of the modern form of “humor” that involves simply digging up some treasured memory from our collective childhoods and making it about something naughty or “inappropriate.” South Park, Robot Chicken — I’m looking at you.

If your idea of hilarity is making a muppet say something dirty or writing a caption about incest under a Family Circus you’ll probably think this CBS promo is a laugh riot.

  6. Oh Frosty, how I thought I knew thee… and what exactly were you doing with Santa in that sleigh?

As for the ad, not offensive, not funny. Just … drek.

  7. Yeah, out of context, not funny and I wouldn’t get it.

    However, since I know the context…I lol’d

That said, it’s a good thing none of these right-wing groups sat in on an anime music video contest at an anime convention. Pretty much the same thing…

  8. This was just not funny. I don’t find Frosty the Snowman talking about porn offensive, but the fact that he’s talking about it to children is kinda creepy.
