After It’s a Wonderful Life, Gremlins is the best Christmas movie ever. You probably don’t remember the 1980s classic about adorable creatures that run amok as a Christmas film, but when you’re watching it, it all comes flooding back. The black comedy is even more delicious with all the cheesy strings of lights in the background, and a central monologue about a fatal chimney accident gives the film its necessary emotional depth. If It’s a Wonderful Life demonstrates that Christmas is about other people, Gremlins demonstrates the American sickness of making Christmas about stuff.
