Even if itโ€™s narrated by Matt Damon, a movie about derivatives and defaulted mortgages probably isnโ€™t going to top your list of must-see movies without some serious eat-your-spinach-itโ€™s-good-for-you determination on your part. But Inside Job is an important documentaryโ€”maybe even more important than An Inconvenient Truthโ€”because it pulls the curtain back on a long-lived and pervasive conspiracy that puts all of Americaโ€™s wealth in the hands of a very few.

The conspiracy that Inside Job unveils is not of the obviously false Masonic or 9/11 Truth varietiesโ€”thereโ€™s no smoke-filled room of string-pulling supergeniuses at the heart of thingsโ€”but in many ways itโ€™s even more frightening because itโ€™s based on greed. Greed led bankers to rig the financial system so that they could turn every loss into a massive gain at the expense of their customers. And greed led to these same bankers bribing economics professors in our most prestigious schools into providing our students with an incomplete and biased education that only turns out more generations of greedy bankers who have been trained to make as much money as possible, no matter who gets hurt in the process.

The documentary could use a little more razzle-dazzle to keep the audience interestedโ€”there are too many scenes where Damon narrates over shot after shot of New York City skyscrapers (โ€™cause thatโ€™s where all the money is, see?), devolving the sequence to an unfortunate drone. And it ends with a generic call for its viewers to โ€œfightโ€ this horrible pervasive system of greed and decadence. Unforgivably, though, it doesnโ€™t offer any specific information about how to fight. Do we vote Democrat? Would that be enough, or should we take up pitchforks? We agree that this is an awful thing that has happened, but what, exactly, should we do, Matt Damon? But Matt Damon doesnโ€™t answer. He just leaves you sitting there, feeling awful about the world. Thanks a lot, Matt Damon. recommended

  1. I think I heard all I needed to hear about greedy bankers and derivatives and default swaps during the initial crisis, listening to the radio to and from work every day. So I’ll just say, “Matt Daymuuuuun.”

  2. Yeah, yeah; let’s vote democrat and get more lawmakers who’ll guarantee Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac junk with our tax dollars and Federal debt. Great idea! The reviewer must have gotten economics education from the corrupted profs. Or perhaps economics was too dull .. until 2008.

  3. Take up pitchforks against the democrats who crafted the laws that enabled and encouraged the bankers to package and sell junk mortgages backed by tax dollars and Federal borrowing. One thing right – our reviewer got an incomplete and biased economics education – if any at all.

Hey Knat, keep your head in the sand if that works for you.

  4. I will go and see this for sure! ALL political interests let this happen. NOT just demos, but repubs were sitting pretty while all this was taking place, Do not forget that tasty fact. Wake up people. If you all think the financial injustices are the worst thing going on try looking up.

  5. where are you MOVE ON? you are absent from being independent of political parties.
what is you position on the movie INSIDE JOB?
what is your position on replacement for Mr. Neil Barofsky SIGTARP?
from Reagan to Clinton to Bushes and Obama, the hen house has been placed under the watch (AND CONTROL) of the wolves.
of all the issues that you raise the moral flag on – they are all nonsense if the money-lenders are allowed to continue to corrupt this nation.
yet you mention nothing about them – where is your voice – have you also come to defend wall-street?
it is not only republicans, it is also democrats that have corrupted our nation.
Obama is correct that we need change – we need MOVE ON to start a new party with principles that we once knew.
we need a new party that does not have extreme platforms in either direction and that is transparent on how it deals with greed and corruption.
republican and democratic parties have lost this agenda and mandate – this is surely obvious to you?
we need a new wineskin and not the same old corrupt party that has stepped too far across the line to ever be able to find its way back.
so, what side are you on?

  6. I am angry to know that the same bankers that created this demise are sitting in our Federal Department. I have no faith anymore in Obama’s address to the people proclaiming that we will take action against this greed and corruption to just then turn around and appoint the same ones that got us there to pristine positions in the government.
They are greedy, devious people that should have had to forfeit their wealth to keep their banks solvent. Instead, the taxpayers, we the people, had to bail them out.
It is pretty easy to see that our government is run by the financial institutions and not by the people.
It is pretty easy to see that we still do not have the strong leader we had hoped to find in Obama.
It is pretty easy to see that integrity, true integrity, is a vanishing personal trait.
We will fail if this unaccountable corruption continues. I simply can’t believe those bankers are a part of our government. It is sickening.

The banks as well as Wall Street must be regulated in order to protect the people, because it seems the folks with the knowledge only care about one thing, themselves. We are a sick society.
It’s not democrats or republicans. It’s all of those who have no true guts to do the right thing for the people, and I mean all the people of the United States who are willing to work provided their jobs don’t continue to disappear.

  8. I was shocked at what was in this documentary. It appears that both parties are to blame. It seems that along with bankers, AIG, etc, that Regan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama all had a hand in our financial crisis. I have always been a Democrat. I first thought that Obama handeled the bail out poorly because of being nieve or something his hands were tied. This documentary showed that Obama reappointed the same people who were directly involved in the criminal type behavior. I honestly am disgusted with both parties and don’t know who to vote for! Is there an indepentant running?
