If I ran ACT Theatre, this is the kind of thing I’d program continuously: John Osebold (composer, guitarist, and frontman of “Awesome”) and Kirk Anderson (the drummer for same) play a song cycle accompanied by old black-and-white film footage that Osebold has edited into insane high-lariousness.
Their harmonies are heartrendingly gorgeous and the film footage—of desperate housewives making coffee circa 1955 and of U.S. wilderness and of airplanes—have been mixed and flipped and slowed down and layered into a marvelous celluloid collage. The sweetness and somberness of the songs plus the comedy of the films equal delight. And there’s a song with a chorus about trade war. Ha!
