Porn!

On Friday, April 24, the Fourth Annual Feminist Porn Awards were
held in Toronto. I know a lot of ass-backward people refuse to believe
that the words “porn” and “feminism” can ever sit next to each other in
the same sentence, but it’s all true. It’s 2009, and there’s finally a
great wave of women-produced porn to surf.

This year, superstar queer filmmaker Shine Louise Houston took the
Feminist Porn Award for Movie of the Year with Champion: Love Hurts.
Houston is the owner/producer/director of San Francisco indie porn
company Pink and White Productions. Pink and White makes real lesbian
porn for real lesbians—and for the real butch, boi, femme, and
trans folk who love them. One of my favorite X-rated review columnists
Gram Ponante once said of Pink and White’s popular Crash Pad Series,
“If the Abby Winters girls showed up at the Crash Pad, they wouldn’t
stand a chance.”

Crash Pad, both the DVD series and the website, are now the gold
standard in lesbian porn—a revolution, utopia, and promised
land.

With Champion, Houston defies genres. Unlike Crash Pad, which is
no-nonsense hardcore sex, Champion is a full feature-length film with
an actual narrative and plot—it’s more of a queer indie film that
(bonus!) includes super-explicit XXX sex scenes. It’s the story of
Jessie (Syd Blakovich, aka Shawn) who’s making her way into a career in
professional mixed martial arts. Between all the fight scenes are the
fuck scenes, in which Jessie has to juggle her ex-girlfriend Cathy (Jiz
Lee) and a pervy and dangerous attraction to her ring opponent, Violet
Vahn (Dallas). The fight scenes are excellent (Blakovich is a
professional mixed-martial-arts cage fighter in real life and the
reigning winner on the crazy-as-hell naked-wrestling site UltimateSurrender.com), and the
film has believable a plot twist when Jessie is faced with a decision
to throw a match.

The whole thing, however, is kind of UN-believable—you may be
tempted to fast-forward to the spanking, 69-ing, or strap-on wielding
scenes—but I bet you won’t. You’ll want to watch the WHOLE thing.
And that is a near-impossible accomplishment in triple-X cinema. They
should give Shine Louise Houston a whole truckload of awards.
