- I sure hope these purple peas are as delicious as their flowers are beautiful.
I planted several varieties of snap and snow peas this year, but nothing new to my garden. Yet in the midst of my pea bed has climbed a single vine with something I’ve never seen before on an edible pea: a purple flower. Every other flower on every other vine is reliably white. As usual.
I’m kinda hoping it’s some sort of weird mutant. The base of the leaves are also purple tinged—I’m crossing my fingers that the pods come out purple as well. The world could use more purple foods.
But more than likely it’s just a stray seed of some purple-flowered variety that got inadvertently mixed into my seed packet. Not that I’m familiar with any purple-flowered edible peas. Any of you ever grow something like this before?
