Food & Water Watch announced today the release of their corporate profile of Monsanto, the company behind a lot of genetically engineered seeds (and also the weed-killer Roundup, if you somehow didn’t know). If you spend your weekends organic gardening and your evenings watching Food, Inc., boy are you gonna love this! I’ll be reading it, too, as I continue to read whatever I can get my hands on that relates to Washington’s Initiative 522, which would mandate the labeling of foods with genetically engineered ingredients.

Says Food & Water Watch’s press release:

As a leading corporation funding anti-labeling efforts, Monsanto represents a serious threat to the freedom of information desired by consumers who want the right to know whether or not their food has been genetically engineered.

“There’s so much that Monsanto doesn’t tell you. It markets itself on this pure food image, and that’s not what it is,” said Amy Turner of Blue Dog Farm in Carnation, WA. “Organic farmers like us are the ones that are concerned about the growing processes of our foods, and making sure that pesticides don’t run off and contaminate waterways. Consumers have the right to know what’s really in their food and how it’s produced, and that starts with labeling GE foods.”

You can read the whole report, which FWW says “provides a thorough overview of the biotechnology giant” right over here. Sounds so fun! Commence the most scintillating book club ever. I’ll bring the hummus!
