People are arguing about the sign in comments over here, but the rumor is true: The owner of Po Dog is opening a bar right next door.

It’ll be called Auto Battery (and the sign is indeed from the former auto battery store there, as Comte points out). Yesterday on the phone, Laura Olson confirmed: Auto Battery will open at 6 a.m. for coffee, then at night will be a sports bar. A sports bar? “A bar with sports on T.V.,” she clarified. Also, there will be shuffleboard. It’s going to be pretty damn bigโ€”2,100 square feetโ€”and opening is scheduled for mid-February (which usually means add at least a few weeks).

So the (adorable) Living Room opened not too long ago, then the (pretty and pretty gay) Lobby Bar, and pretty soon the (circus-themed!) Unicorn will appear where the Satellite was.

So many bars! Is there a saturation point somewhere? Or is a drink at a bar exactly the small, soothing treat that these times call for more and more of?

All I know is my liver hurts.

  1. This can’t be good. I can drink beer and watch the game on TV at home. It’s a little tougher for me to replace my car’s alternator or generator in the rec room.

  2. Just walking past Unicorn makes me want to flee Capitol Hill to avoid the inevitable implosion of hipster ego as it reaches critical mass.

  3. Not enough bars, bars closing, clubs closing this and that closing all across Capitol Hill the Stranger is upset. Book stores close but reopen on the Hill, music stores relocate to the Hill, Capitol Hill is alive once again and the Stranger is happy.
New Bars, Record Stores, Book Stores and businesses in general are what the Capitol wants but with this post there is too much of a good thing at least according to the Stranger.
Shut up and promote and not question.

Get fucked, funkiller. What the fuck is a “hipster” other than a mass of things your snotty ass doesn’t like? You’re swimming in pretension.

  5. I’ve just now realized that BJC has the greatest job in the whole wide world. So many bars!

But sports bars suck. With apologies to sports fans, bars are for drinking and talking and maybe playing some darts. They are not for watching the goddamned idiot box from twelve different screens. One TV over the bar I can understand, but this wide-screen-on-every-wall business has got to stop.

  6. What? I can’t believe nobody has shut you down on this one Bethany. If this place has more than one TV It’ll be the ONLY real sports bar in the neighborhood. It will be welcomed by the sports fans at Seattle U and Capitol hillers who watch sports, such as myself. It’s not all about locations to drink- entertainment? hello? Be glad this isn’t just another empty storefront as it has been for over a year.
