Sadly, MezzaLuna in Judkins Park is closing. The bakery/restaurant opened only last fall, but apparently they couldn’t make it work. Sunday will be their last day.
Central District News reports:
It’s a loss for the south end of the neighborhood which was already lacking in food options. And I think it’s also a lesson for the neighborhood: support your local businesses and go there often, or else you’ll likely lose them.
Lauren says that it came down to finances and exhaustion. She and co-owner Kim have worked in the store almost every day since it opened last fall, and the revenue never reached a point to where they could bring someone else on to help out.

I’m sorry it didn’t work out for them. BUT … I think it was more about the location, atmosphere and food than it was about people not supporting local business. You have to excel in at least one of those three categories to continue bringing in paying customers.
I blame hands.

It’s a fucking recession folks. I went there a few weeks ago and the food was super good but the service sucked really bad. You have to be on point with every single aspect of your restaurant all the time, especially in a downturn. I mean people don’t want to spend money to begin with; they sure as hell won’t spend it on bad service no matter how good the food is.
Yeah, I’ll second that, food totally good, service and prices slow lame and highish. In a hood like that I think we need more honest options, not yupped-out plates. But thanks for giving it a try. In times like these for these non-destination neighborhood spots you need to do your business on volume. Next up–Dulces Latin Bistro?
I live near there, and second 3 and 4. The food was really good, but it was slow and the location sucked. I did not even know they were there until a few months ago and I am only like 3 blocks away. Even then at first I thought they were more of a coffee shop.
We really need a better business core along 23rd.
