Molly Moon Neitzel of Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream (with shops on Captiol Hill and Wallingford) announced yesterday that she plans on opening a third location next summer. But there’s a catch! If you want Molly Moon’s to come to your ‘hood, you’re gonna have to be eat a lot of ice cream. Says their press release (bolds mine):

Unsure of what Seattle neighborhood to call home, Molly Moon Neitzel will be parking Leo, the Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream Truck, in three locations over the next three months to see where the most ice cream-lovin’ Seattleites reside.

Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 1 Leo will be parked in Madrona at 1435 34th Ave. from 5 to 10 p.m. Kids who visit Leo tomorrow between 6 and 8 p.m. will receive a free kid-sized scoop. Leo will be parked in the same location throughout the month of December and will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10 p.m. and Friday’s through Sundays from noon to 10 p.m.

Following Leo’s December stint in Madrona, Seattle’s favorite ice cream truck will move to Queen Anne in January and will spend all of February in Ballard.

The press release continues, saying: “Fans can help bring Molly Moon’s third shop to their neighborhood not only by visiting Leo, but by ‘liking’ the official Bring Molly Moon’s to Madrona, Bring Molly Moon’s to Ballard and Bring Molly Moon’s to Queen Anne Facebook pages.”

So basically, the neighborhood with the most Facebook users who are willing to get the fattest eat the most ice cream over the course of a month will win their very own Molly Moon’s location! Seems a little strange to me, but I suppose this is field research in 2k10. May the hungriest neighborhood win.

(On a semi-related note, I’d love to see Full Tilt come to Queen Anne. Then I could have Molly Moon’s and Bluebird on the Hill, for when I want ice cream after work, and Full Tilt on the weekends, when I want ice cream just a few blocks from my house. Think about it, Full Tilt. There’s even an empty store front right on Queen Anne Avenue, across from Uptown Coffee, now that Underdawg Records has closed up shop.)

  1. @3: Not really. Madrona is 58.6% white. Seattle average is 70.1%. Ballard and Queen Anne are in the 80s (as is Cap Hill and Wallingford where their current two stores are). If the really wanted to cater to white people exclusively, they’d open a store in Madison Park.

“In more recent years, as the neighborhood has gentrified, Madrona has been steadily returning to a more Caucasian demographic. The 2000 Census notes that, of the 5,097 residents in King County Census Tract 78 (covering Madrona east of 31st Avenue), 72% are Caucasian (up from 65% in 1990), 20% are African American (down from 29% in 1990), and 4% are Asian (roughly unchanged from 1990). Census Tract 77, two-thirds of which is in the Central District, has a significantly higher percentage of African American residents.”

  3. What’s wrong with too many white people? If complaining about too many black peoPle makes you racist, does complaining about too many white people mean you’re still angry at mom and dad for raising you and giving you a college education and sOciology degree?

  4. This is what happens when someone hires a “SEO/SEM Consultant” – somebody comes up with a harebrained scheme to get customers to like them on Facebook.

  5. What’s the point, you know they’re going to open their new store in West Seattle. Ballardites can go to Wallingford, just like the Fremonsters and the U District co-eds.

    This is a faux contest.

  6. overly biased sample, especially when it’s cold/rainy and/or snowy.

that being said, when we lived in germany, we had gellato almost daily throughout the cold winter, was a good way to wait for the tram. it was cheap (1 euro for a large scoop) and significantly tastier than that overpriced shit molly keeps churning.

I used to live on 29th and Cherry. Indeed there is a line of demarcation thereabouts (I would say 29th is in fact that line right now) that seemed like it is in the process of creeping westwards.

Madrona struck me as being primarily a neighborhood of affluent families. And the “Alehouse” there is terrible.

  8. @16 – A West Seattle location – at least one near the Junction – would probably be a mistake. The local loyalty to Husky Deli killed the Ben & Jerry’s that had a go of it there.
