Molly Moon’s is the local ice cream shop responsible for delicious (and adventurous) flavors like Balsamic Strawberry, Maple Bacon (with real bacon), and Salted Black Licorice. They use local ingredients, make all their sundae toppings from scratch, and there’s usually a line down the block just to get a scoop.
About the Wallingford shop, Stranger readers have said:
“Molly Moon’s is like a walk through memory lane for my tastebuds, only better because the ice cream of my childhood was almost inevitably too sweet and the cones were never filled properly. I strongly recommend the cardamom.”
“I could drink the homemade hot fudge!”
“The best ice cream of my life! I dream of the salted caramel taste and am planning my next trip to Seattle around making it over to Wallingford to Molly Moon’s!”
Sounds good, right? Tomorrow they’re opening a second store on Capitol Hill at 10th and Pine, in the same building as the Tin Table and Oddfellows.
The shop will be open the same hours as Wallingford’s (noon-11 pm everyday) and on Saturday there will be free cones for the kids between 3 and 5 pm. They’ll have all 14 of their current flavors, including Rosemary Meyer Lemon, Salted Caramel, Pomegranate Curry Sorbet, Cardamom, and Ginger (they have more traditional flavors too, like Vanilla Bean, Chocolate, “Scout” Mint [with Girl Scout cookies], and Coffee [with Vivace coffee]).

Is this the heavy with fat kind of ice cream that’s the equivalent of eating lard?
i hope not…
Am I the only person who thinks their Salted Caramel is kinda nasty?
Capitol Hill flavors!
Discarded Condom Caramel!
Cocaine Cut with Baby Laxative Licorice!
@1 I don’t think it is, no. It’s creamier and more dense than most store brands, but it’s about a 14-15% milk fat, which is right in the middle of the average range.
A friend of mine does think it’s a little too rich, so I guess it depends on what your tolerance is. But they always have at least two flavors of vegan sorbet on the menu too.
@2, the salted caramel is completely delicious. Please rearrange your taste buds and enjoy.
White people love this ice cream.
@2,
It’s all salty, no sweet, which might appeal to some, but it certainly belies the name.
Molly Moon’s salted caramel ice cream should not be eaten by itself, but paired with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, or something to help balance out that overwhelming saltiness. (For a lesson in proper salty v. sweet balance, see Cupcake Royale’s salted caramel cupcake, which is a chocolate cupcake with salted-caramel frosting.)
If you need a little sweetness in your salty-caramel, just have them add the fudge. It’s more than enough to sate you and the two go very well together.
Thanks Schmader. It would’ve been nice to have been warned before I ordered a goddamn waffle cone of the stuff!
Ice cream can be hard to make. Amusingly enough, Vanilla ice cream is one of the more difficult flavors to get right for people’s palates.
I think the salted caramel can be good, but people are right about mixing it with other things. I admit the maple bacon was mildly disappointing. But the Vivace coffee ice cream is consistantly terrific.
I dream sometimes of the Balsamic Strawberry.
@8
I had it with a scoop of chocolate. It really didn’t help because their chocolate is also not sweet, although it’s fine on its own. Haagen Daz has a salty caramel flavor which is much better. Caramel, whether it has extra salt in it or not, should never lack in sweetness.
The ice cream, actually is not that great – inventive flavors, but you can find the same at other local (less crowded!) scoop shops like Full Tilt. Who wants to wait in a line with a bunch of snotty kids?!
I can’t wait for the frozen custard joint to open up on Pike @13th.
Frozen custard? What? I am behind the times when it comes to frozen delicacies, it seems.
clogs the arteries – don’t eat this shit – ever – sorry to bear the bad news
heart stuff is real
good health over a life time is real

@15,
I think that might be an East Coast thing. I saw it occasionally over there, almost never over here. It’s ok, but ice cream’s better.
Maybe I should start a frozen tapioca stand.
Can anyone think of any other semi-solid deserts that might market well?
Their logo dog looks like Blinky from This Modern World.
I would lie down in traffic for the cardamom. I’m so excited it’s going to be within walking distance.
Ugh. Stop putting bacon and other socially conservative ingredients in food. I won’t be supporting this place. Thanks for the heads up.
I work with a member of the family who owns Old School Custard, they’re currently in Bonney Lake but are excited about their new store on Pike.
Also, Peaks has been rocking the Midwestern treat in Roosevelt since December. My wife is from Nebraska, so I’ve been enjoying frozen custard for years now.
Molly Moon’s is delish. Their birthday cake flavor tastes like birthday cake, frosting and all. It’s like Willy Wonka made it.
Seattle needs a rice pudding place like NY.
Their ice cream is decent but definitely not worth 45 minutes in line.
@6:
you, my friend, are PRICELESS!
