The New Yorker isn’t the only venerable glossy publication that’s threatened by declining ad sales. According to 24/7 Wall Street, Gourmet Magazine, another Conde Nast publication, “will probably not see the end of the year.” Gourmet manages to be both accessible and appropriately food snobbish. It is endlessly surprising (a recent recipe called for ground dried shrimp, galangal, and long beans; a recent travel feature focused on Walla Walla) and beautiful (the rolls in this month’s cover story, including orange pumpkin cloverleafs, above, give a new meaning to the term “food porn.”) The arrival of Gourmet in my mailbox is a jump-up-and-down highlight of my month. It would be a huge blow to see it go away or “survive” in some diminished, online-only form.

  1. The thought of Gourmet magazine going under gives me a slight anxiety attack. I have loved that magazine since I was a kid. I have kept a number of issues over the years because they were so damn good.
This is because I haven’t renewed my subscription isn’t it….

  2. That bun could go other way.

It’s either a woman getting really excited and wanting it from a dude, or else a dude just after sex with another dude. It’s two sides of the same coin.

    So I guess everybody wins…

  3. Too bad the venerable (ie, more than five years old) old Walla Walla fancy restaurant, 26 Brix, just went under. So much for the wine culture.

  4. Holy crap. I’m sick as a damned dog and have been unable to look at food all day.

But I would eat a bucket of those things. A BUCKET.

  5. I let my subscription to Gourmet lapse (I don’t cook many of its recipes) but DAMN it makes me sad to see them fold. They’re an institution.

  6. Gourmet and Bon Appetit are the two best food porn magazines out there (along with Saveur). This economical suckfest is really bringing me down.

  7. hmmm..
earlier today i received a subscription notice for a year’s renewal starting in april. i was going to let it lapse, ( the photos and articles are lovely, but the recipes get broken up for pages and pages ) now i’m not sure. would it be worth it to pay for twelve month subscription, knowing that it’ll be only be good for nine months ?

  8. I let my subscription lapse and decided to go with Bon Apetit this year instead. Now I’m regretting it. This is all my fault, isn’t it?

  9. Meh, as long as Cook’s Illustrated sticks around I’ll survive. That magazine is practically Alton Brown in printed form.

I find that I like reading Gourmet and the others, but I don’t seem to end up making to many of the recipes.
