Union Square Grill served foie gras. Seattle doesn’t tolerate cruel, unethical businesses for very long. Maybe they can relocate to Gainesville.

The comedy potential for confusion with the Lusty is not unlike an Eastern Washington apple that is ripe and ready for plucking and packaging.

It does kind of seem like that, but Dan isn’t typically subtle in his racism.
I think he was trying to make light of the hubbub about the local economy’s collapse, but it isn’t really funny… and the hubbub is warranted.

I would have called it a refreshing change.
Silly me, I actually like a wide variety of ethnic food choices.
The Union Square Grill being replaced by an empty, dusty storefront with a “For Lease” sign in its window for the next 3 years would be much more evidence of a collapsing local economy.
Cantinas can take over the world as far as I am concerned. I’m just waiting for churches to start going belly-up and opening as Cantinas. I think “Ay Mi Dios” would be a great new chain.
The Union Grill was basically the Metropolitan but not as good but just as expensive. I went there once and was disappointed with both the food and service. Even though I am basically poor, I try to go to either the Met, El Gaucho, or Morton’s every couple of years. The service at Morton’s sucked. I was stoned at El Gaucho, so can’t be objective, but the Met, even when I’ve gone in wearing a t-shirt and jeans, is happy to take my money and makes a hell of a steak.
If the Met ever closes I will cry. The Union Square closing just makes me yawn.
Sad to see the loss. Union Square Grill was, once upon a time, my special place. Only took my dearest friends there. But I heard that after 2001 or so it changed up its menu. Didn’t go much after that because I loved their crab cakes and their bouillabaisse, and both had been removed from their bill of fare. I heard that it had lost some of its “linen” appeal. When it opened and for several years afterward, it reminded me of some of the better eateries in NYC.
True, it was a little pricey – especially for dinner. But it was reserved for special people and special occasions only. On the other hand, when I was feeling a little beaten up, lunch there on Friday (and that fabulous bouillabaisse) could be had for about $12. That made everything better – every time.
So Bobby, Charlotte, Carl, Rosie, Lynda, Nicki, and Tessie – restaurants come and restaurants go, but we’ll always have the Union Square Grill.

I went there for my birthday one year. Too bad.
I met friends there once before going to the theatre. I had $30, which I thought would be enough for my own dinner, one drink, and a tip.
Ha ha! Silly me. I looked at the menu, and realized I could have a $15 salad and $10 fries, and those were the cheapest options. And a glass of wine was $8.
I think the Union Square Grill survived all these years on expense accounts, and if companies are starting to tighten their belts on expense accounts, the horribly overpriced “executive lunch” spots like this will be the first to go.
