At the behest of some rich person, Seattle Parks and Recreation has decided that one of the few nude beaches in Seattle (Denny Blaine Park) would be a GREAT place for a children’s playground. Considering the multiple park options nearby for this project that would not be adjacent to one of the few spaces in this city where queer adults can be themselves and feel comfortable in their bodies, there is no way this decision is coincidental.
I have gone to this park for years, and as the child of a queer person who has lived in Seattle since the ‘80s, I know how critical it is for us to maintain spaces where queer people don’t need to worry about optics every damn second. In a world that is constantly repressing our identities, is it not possible for queer people to have one space? Really hoping the parks department chooses another site, because I don’t know where else I can go and feel comfortable in my body in this damn city!!

I was recently in a child’s park and saw several running around pantless. A few were fondling their friends. I’m not into this, but I thought i saw a few peeing on their parents.

@3 – I’m sure you are correct that ‘Denny-Blaine children (or their parents) aren’t public park types.’ But ‘think of the children’ will be an awfully convenient excuse to enforce a ban on nudity at the beach once kids are in the vicinity… and I’ll bet that’s EXACTLY the kind of people some Denny-Blane parents are.
It’s not going to go well when the cops show up to try and arrest someone for being naked in that park. I wonder if the NIMBY richies trying to ram this through will have regrets when the chill nudists are replaced by constant protests and nosy reporters?

@8 I like a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, but if Denny-Blaine parents wanted to ban nudity in Denny Blaine park, aren’t there easier ways to accomplish that? Seems cumbersome, expensive, and time consuming to create a pretext by implementing a convoluted plan to develop a playground at their own expense. Couldn’t they just skip all that and go right to the part where they complain about nudity around their kids? All that would take is walking down to the park on a summer day.
hbb dear, Paying a few hundred thousands bucks for playground equipment is nothing for people who have homes valued at 22 million and who made their money off of Robotic, Shuck’s and QFC. It makes them look philanthropic rather than puritanical.

the author is incorrect, however. only D-B has off-street parking, and therefore accessible spaces. that is needed if there’s going to be a playground. lakeview, viretta, howell & madrona just have street parking. one has to go down lake wa blvd south of spectrum dance theater for a parking lot.
