CHARLES: THE ACE OF BASS
I just saw these gentlemen—the two-man sketch group Charles—for the first time at Laff Hole the other night (there was a banjo!), and they were the kind of funny that won’t stick around Seattle for long. (Los Angeles is already trying to yoink them from us—Charles won “Best Solo or Duo” in the LA Comedy Festival last month.) Also featuring Ubiquitous They, also good. The Satori Loft, 8:30 pm, $10.
MAKE ME FUNNY
Have you always wanted to be a standup comedian but don’t know where to start? First of all, something is wrong with you. Doing standup comedy is a slow, soul-crushing death. Second of all, CHECK THIS SHIT OUT: “The game is simple: Every month we choose three contestants at random and place them with a team of two comedians each. The teams are then split off and the comedians have very little time to coach the contestants and help craft a 5 minute set using suggestions from the audience.” Then prizes happen! Also, sorry in advance about your soul. Comedy Underground, 8:30 pm, $5, all ages.
EXPENSIVE GENES WITH BILLY WAYNE DAVIS
Billy Wayne Davis calls himself a “thinking man’s hillbilly,” so if you are a thinking man (or woman) looking for a hillbilly, have I got a show for you! It’s Billy Wayne Davis. In case that wasn’t clear. This show will feature a bunch of outstanding local funnymen including Owen Straw, David Tveite, Kevin Clark, Travis Vogt, Yogi Paliwal, and Ahamefule J. Oluo; and one funnywoman, Michelle Leigh. Tell all your thinking friends who are also people who like hillbillies. El Corazón, 8:30 pm, $7, 21+.
Local acts do regional festivals for experience and exposure all the time. Participation in those festivals doesn’t necessarily indicate an act intends to move.
It’s great to see Charles in Lindy’s list of suggested sources of laughs, especially since I am one of Charles. I would also mention that our opening act this weekend is the incomparable Ubiquitous They. ALSO, The Ace of Bass, will be the last chance to see a show at the Satori Loft at 619 Western (although the Satori group itself will continue to put on excellent shows in its yet-to-be-announced new venue for a long time to come). After that The Ace of Bass will move to the Ballard Underground for its final weekend.
Finally I might add that Gomez is right. I recently signed up for a gym membership so I’m pretty much here for life.

The ‘Short Blurb,’ a brief description on a subject matter, died July 26th, in The Stranger. The cause was an article by Lindy West in which she used the death of Heath Ledger to describe a comedy routine.
The ‘Short Blurb’had encountered problems, in recent years, due to the rise of the ‘Tagline.’ Of this, West remarked, “It was time to put the nail in the coffin…I’m glad it’s over. Just like Heath Ledger. I can be pretty cruel sometimes, but I think it’s hilarious.”
The ‘Short Blurb’ will be sadly missed by it’s family and friends.
