It’s ridiculous, but sometimes I’m reluctant to out a new, recently discovered, or most favorite jam. Like, not because I’m an elitist hoarder, but if it’s a track I JUST HEARD, I can be a bit shy to lose the exclusiveness. It’s a TOTAL record collector thing. I was a record nerd in the PRE-internet age, and there used to be a notion that any time you’d find a record which was unknown, to you or your friend group, you could fantasize and wonder, “What if this is the only know copy?” Of course IT NEVER WAS, but in the days of having only zines, price guides, and word of mouth as resources, it was a silly, exciting fantasy we all experienced.
Anyway, in my never ending trawl for new 45s, I came across a killer soul 45: Irene And The Scotts’ “I’m Stuck On My Baby!” Such love at first sight. Er, listen.
Ms. Irene has a big, BAD hollering voice, the groove is solid, and them sax-a-muh-phomes carry the hook! I know ZILTCH about the record except Irene was a singer in Chicago, the Scotts were a local Chicago group, and it was recorded and produced in Detroit by Motown’s Funk Brothers’ Bob Babbitt. The single is kinda rare, so if you go looking, expect a $200 price tag.
