First, I wanna say RIP to Queensbridge MC KL, of the
excellent if overlooked QB crew Screwball. The man, also known
as Kenny Lou, died of an asthma attack. You might remember Screwball
from their Giuliani-baiting single “Who Shot Rudy” (but damn, most of
you, probably not); Screwball’s Y2K the Album is an old favorite
of mine.

That aside, it’s been a pretty good week so far (last week to you).
It got sunny again, I’ve been reading some good books, and two new
State Property songs leaked! In the first occurrence of any
ex-Roc-A-Fellas getting their shit together, looks like Beanie
Sigel
‘s Philly supergroup is actually releasing material, and it’s
ill (‘specially the gutter butter down-the-line joint “Ocean’s
Seven”). Possibly my favorite State Propโ€“Chain Gang banger is of
course Peedi Crakk, a dude who combines Redman‘s
outrageous ghetto sooperpowers with the aggressive bizarreness of
Ultramagnetic MCsโ€“era Kool Keith. Crakk Daddy just
murks the shit outta “Get Busy,” the new single from the Roots
upcoming Rising Down albumโ€”you know, the one that isn’t
the straight-ass Fall Out Boy collabo “Birthday Girl.”
Uhh, can I get a price check on Weak Sauce?

But what’s really saucy this week? For starters, if you were
planning on seeing rock/funk/jam (according to their MySpace) band
Flowmotion at Nectar on Friday, April 11 (it’s possible), then
you should know that the Flow will have a very special guest: Mr.
Sonny Bonoho. That’s right, if you wanna see one of the town’s
most out-there (not to mention most genuine)
MCs/producers/entrepreneurs/personalities rock with a live band, you
know where to be. I only pray they can keep up with my man Sonny,
especially if he’s wearing his patented BB Skates (www.bbskate.com)! How many rappers you
know make their own skates?

Sonny’s ATL patna in the Bona Brothers, Playboy Tre,
recently got some real shine on the XXL website for his Goodbye
America: Diaries of a Drunk Loner
(which esteemed hiphop blogger
Noz deemed “one of the best mixtapes in recent memory”).
Included on the website and on that tape is the Bona Bros’
inspirational “I Know.” Say that then, Sonnyโ€”I love seeing cats
make moves, but more importantly (to me at least), make good music.

Bonoho’s stunt double JFK is opening up for Living
Legends
cofounder Luckyiam at Nectar on Sunday, April 13, as
well as DJ Rhettmatic and Illegitimate Children. Look
hater, don’t be mad I’m harping on this dude’s upcoming solo shit.
Rhettmatic, the legendary Beat Junkie himself, who will be
spinning for JFK, is reportedly also very hyped about this upcoming
project; so were the people who caught his set at that awesome
Macklemore/Physics/Wizdom show from a couple weeks back. His ill
hooks and his Jake One bangers certainly raised a lot of
eyebrows. Me, I’m certain I can raise either eyebrow. I learned how to
do it as a kid. I’m very talented. recommended
